Well, where? I like the idea of renovating the astrodome into a soccer stadium. I think they could gut the inside and make it seat only around 25k with a lot of boxes. All the problems that the other sports teams had (small concourse, not enough room for boxes) would not be a problem with the smaller capacity.
I heard that it looks like they will be playing in Robertson Stadium. I know this isn't the best stadium in the world location wise but it is A GREAT SOCCER STADIUM! I have watched 2 games there. I watched the U20 National Team there and then I watched the LA Galaxy there. Alexi Lalas played in the stadium and he thinks it is a great stadium for soccer. He said it reminds him of the European stadiums.
I think that if they are moving to Houston then there has to be someone interested in building a stadium there. Otherwise they would have just stayed in San Jose where there is at least the possibility of building. So I would think that they are looking at a low cost temporary home. Is there any Southlake (new, nice High School stadium) options out there?
Given the districts of the Houston City Council members and the precinct of the Harris County Commissioners Court judge that will be at the present at the presentation at City Hall tomorrow, I'd say that Robertson Stadium is looking like a decent bet.
Cy-Fair ISD Richard Berry complex, just now in final stages of completion. It was mentioned as a possible. However, I am pretty sure it does not have the capacity of UH's Robertson, though it will compare very favorably to some college stadiums.
This is a great stadium. I saw the Women's national team play there against Mexico on TV about six or seven years ago. If the Quakes play there,it will take some of the sting of the move away.
Robertson is a great option. They will have to spruce up the concession stands and improve logistics on parking but I am sure MLS is doing some improvements to the stadium. I live on the NW side where the new Cy-Fair Stadium is being built but this is fieldturf and it would be sickening to see football lines. I hope it is at Robertson until they build the SS stadium. It would be great to see Reliant Stadium host an MLS Cup.
Channel 2 just did an small snipet from Oliver Luck (CEO of the Houston Sports Authority) said they will be playing at Robertson Stadium.
There is downtown in the background Directions to this building from I-45 South (downtown) - Exit Cullen - Turn Right on Cullen - Turn Right at Holman - Stadium is on your left
I could dig, but in the mess that is the Houston/San Jose forum amalgam, it might be hard to find. So in my laziness, I'll just ask you folks: Why not Reliant Stadium for the first couple of years?
Too expensive to operate. 60,000 seat stadium would look awful. Not intimate enough. Bob McNair (Texans owner) only interested in big international games. He was toying with buying a franchise but passed it up. Robertson is still pretty big but 32,000 is better that 60K. Lalas played in it a few years back and loved Robertson. He said it reminded him of some of the European stadiums.
Playing in Reliant would be horrible. I may not be able to make many games at a smaller location, but if they were to play on a field turf field with football lines the number of games I would go to would approach 0. So Robertson is okay although about 10k seats too many.
I guess they'll just be doing what Birmingham does when the Nat's head to town: fill up the side opposite of the camera and behind the goal, while keeping one side completely empty. Unless, however, we sell out the games .
What's the parking situation like at Robertson Stadium? Is there enough parking on campus -- my recollection is that the neighborhood around U of H isn't so hot.
Two important questions if they play at Robertson: 1) From the picture above it appears that the field would be no wider than Spartan Stadium. 2) If it is at a college stadium, will there be beer sales? Have to have beer sales, right?
Looks like a nice stadium. I hope it works out for you, considering you'll have SJ's players, it can't be that bad of a team. Where is the rumored SSS going to be built? Any theories?
