This is what I really hope happens. He needs to leave PSG asap where he can get playing time. It will polish his skills. A loan to a lower table team or another league would be good.
Agreed. Weah should see plenty of playing time in PSG’s first few preseason games as, quite literally, all of their attackers are playing in the World Cup. Turn some heads in preseason and get yourself a good loan, young man!
Profile from his youth club: https://www.edpsoccer.com/news_article/show/922998 "It's something that I can't explain," Tim said. "I'm speechless right now. Getting the goal probably was the best thing that happened to me so far in my life. I am so appreciative that God gave me the opportunity to score a beautiful goal in front of amazing fans in such an amazing country on such an amazing day, Memorial Day. I'm so proud of myself. I'm so proud of the team."
did I question? Or did I ponder considering his dad is president of Liberia and there may have been some pressure on that front
I don't think that's necessarily true. If Weah is happy and feels like he's developing, a year of splitting time between the first team and (mostly) reserves wouldn't automatically be a cause for concern at his age. Thomas Muller played reserve ball in the third division through age 18 - he turned out OK. Also worth noting that at PSG Weah has gotten to train alongside some of the best forwards in the world, which is a pretty unique opportunity. It's not like he'd be riding the pine in Norway or something.
If the choice is his he might be wise to choose to stay at PSG, at least through January. TT likes to tinker with line-ups and he has historically had no issues with playing a kid over a big name star.
He's considering a transfer to a men's rec league team in NYC: https://www.si.com/soccer/2018/06/20/tim-weah-usmnt-psg-mens-league-pickup-soccer
Oh I'm pissed............I tried like hell to find an extra player or two for my Men's O-30 Division I game and Timmy fires out a tweet and boom like that, some scrub DM's him, and before you know it he's playing. Damn, we can even have up to three U-30 players on a game day roster. I missed my chance. Man, I blew it. Oh well.......we won anyway. Turns out we didn't need some dude that plays for some Frenchy team call Par-is St. Jermaine or whatever they are called
Great story, but I'm guessing his coaches and directors at PSG wouldn't exactly be thrilled to hear about it.
Yeah. I wonder how the PSG insurance on him works in such situations. But truly awesome and I would like to see the men's league rules modified to enable one first division professional to play in a team per game. How else will the dudes in the men's league get to the next level without good competition?
Straight out of the Kevin Durant playbook. He's got some epic stories of joining random flag football teams and pickup games while in OKC. This is how you market yourself to uber fans.
Ron Gant. Wasn't pickup, but riding a dirk bike (expressly in violation of his contract). Ruined a very promising career.
You would also hope that the rest of the players on the field treated him with kid gloves- no clumsy tackles. In a sort-of related story, I once walked onto the gym basketball court for the standard noon pick-up game and saw a bunch of enormous men (sort of tall, very heavy and not fat) playing ball already against some of the regulars. All they did was run around the 3-point line and shoot jump shots. I asked one, and he said they were all linemen for the Carolina Panthers and had no intention of going anywhere near the basket and getting undercut by some idiot and blowing out a knee. Makes sense. Was a weird game- all the bigs on the perimeter and all the little quick guys running around under the basket.
I said hello to Marcello Balboa on a boat ride after the USMNT had beaten Costa Rica in San Jose, Ca, in the run up to the 98 WC. I went to the game. He ignored me. But one of his friends was cordial enough. I see Tim is a lil more human. It's a NY thing. Good man.
