I didn't see the match but he apparently was playing RB and the guy who replaced him in the 82nd minute was a forward. Also Lorient had a player get a red card 3 minutes before Weah was subbed.
We don’t normally provide context here, but just this once we’ll allow it. Please don’t make it a habit.
It is context but it shows they don't value Weah at all as a forward or they would have just moved him up. Unless he wants to be an outside back he needs to move on. What a weird, crappy twist for him. Is maybe our best offensive weapon in the WC but I guess the French league is much tougher than the WC.
I see the situation somewhat differently. The manager likes Weah, wants him on the field, but feels that the combination of Weah in the back and others further forward is best for the team. Playing complete (or nearly complete) matches is much preferable to spot duty off the bench, even if that means playing ‘out of position.’ The Lille manager got it right today - Weah’s substitution, I mean. Going a man up created a real opportunity, and fresh legs up front were called for. On a different day and under different circumstances, maybe you push Weah up and sub in a different player. Not today. I certainly agree that if Weah sees his future as an attacking player, as I hope he does, then he likely has to move elsewhere. But for the moment, to play’s the thing.
Sure. Right now he's being a good professional and a good teammate. After the season he needs to talk to them about how they view him and move him on if their views clash especially since he was so professional this year and didn't make a fuss. Now if he does see his long term future as a an attacking defender that's different.
We don't allow reasonable people disagreeing reasonably either, but you and @Pegasus are really pushing our tolerance. Just sayin' . . .
With the win LOSC sneak back into 5th and the final Europe-chance "Conference League" spot. 5-6-7 are still very tight, but LOSC staying in the race. Catching Monaco (or Marseille/Lens) will require some very unlikely results at this point.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/ligue-1/ 538's current projections have Lille finishing 5th, and not far out of 4th (and CL): 86 PSG 76 Marseille 75 Lens 72 Monaco 70 Lille 65 Rennes 60 Reims 59 Nice 59 Lyon The teams all have 9 matches remaining, and the projection above assumes Lille will earn 2 points/match. That doesn't sound easy to over-perform. 538 currently gives Lille a 20% chance of a top-4 finish.
Lille could make a deep run in the Conference, Nice (#5 last season) is about to play the QF against Basel and they go as favorites.
Interesting they see Rennes and Reims with a late-season slide. I'm not a sharp enough Ligue 1 watcher to know if that's likely. Would not be surprised if LOSC end up in 5th, 2 - 4 points back from 4th.
If Lille finishes 5th, that would basically be an average of their finishes in their prior two seasons (1st in 21-22, and 10th last season).
They actually did move Weah up to at least RWB if not RM, as I wrote about in the PBP thread. But only for a few minutes before the sub. Lille were dominant and cruising to a 1-0 win before the bizarre equalizer. Bringing in fresh legs to the attack was a good decision, and not necessarily any reflection on Weah - good attackers get subbed off late almost every game. He's been playing a ton of RB and even some LB, mostly well, because of a rash of injuries. That may not last either.
Whatever was said/done at HT, it apparently worked - Lille with two goals in quick succession (David @ 70', Cabella @ 72'), to turn the game. Lille 2-1 Montpellier now at 75'.
