I think the number of non-Spanish speakers on that team is down to almost zero. And Callender is now on the bench, right?
They did it they really did it Welcome to the team, William 🧤Read more about new signing here: https://t.co/oLaTpX5ang pic.twitter.com/xl163Hz6KO— Inter Miami CF (@InterMiamiCF) May 21, 2025
I always liked William but not sure what happened here. Pretty cool that he gets to play with Messi...... Inter Miami officializes new teammate for Messi as they prepare for FIFA Club World Cup Inter Miami has officially announced the signing of William Yarbrough, a 36-year-old goalkeeper and two-time Liga MX champion with León. The experienced shot-stopper, who also played in MLS with the Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes, joins the club as a free agent. His arrival helps fill the gap left by Drake Callender, who is recovering from hernia surgery, and provides depth behind starting keeper Óscar Ustari and Rocco Ríos Novo.
I know what happened here. He was terrible. He was basically retired because no one was interested in his services.
I didn’t know that Callender had hernia surgery. I had been wondering why he was replaced by a GK — I guess from Spain? — who is pretty bad.
Per wiki 38 soon to be 39 year old GK Oscar Ustari Born in América, Buenos Aires Province, Ustari arrived in Independiente's youth system at the age of 14. The untimely deaths of Emiliano Molina and Lucas Molina – both playing in his position – propelled him to the first team sooner than expected, and he made his Primera División debut on 5 October 2005 in a 2–0 win against Newell's Old Boys, remaining first choice with the Avellaneda side in the following tournaments, under both Jorge Burruchaga and Miguel Ángel Santoro (both former players with the club, the latter also a goalkeeper)
He was playing pretty well until recently. One of the complaints I see about Masch from Miami fans is that he’s relying too much on Argentinian players (besides he obviously good ones). “If it’s not Argentinian it’s crap!”
From that same wiki… “After starting out at Independiente, he spent most of his professional career in Spain, mainly with Getafe ” It was Total Soccer Show that had said Oscar Ustari had played in Spain... I guess they were sort of right. I guess everybody speed reads Wikipedia…
I think the Yarbrough thing is not quite as bad as it seems. I think Miami has another #2(?), and Yarbrough is the #3 required for Club World Cup. The fact that he speaks Spanish was probably a bigger factor in their signing him than his capabilities as a GK. It's probably very unlikely he'll ever play in a game for them, but if he ever has to, at least he'll be able to comfortably converse with Masch.
I liked William Yarbrough a lot more than Daniel Vega, Matthias Almeyda’s favorite goalkeeper. At least he was American and didn’t take up an international or cap space. Vega was the worst and other than being his countryman , I never understood why Almeyda liked him that much.
I did a quick temperature check on the Yarbrough acquisition in MLS and Miami spaces. No one seems to have any idea how bad he was for us last year. Just some mumbling about his time in Liga MX, etc.
Never heard of the guy but he's a former Quake and recently a local coach: https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/san-jose-earthquakes-player-homicide/3891262/ Edit: seems like some of you knew him -- https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/why-keep-supporting-the-eq.2127803/page-3#post-41798562
Not great. I see a reference to him as a midfielder for the 1987 WSA Quakes. I don't see any evidence that he was a GK himself, but he somehow became the The Clash's 1st GK coach in 1996? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Dave Gold played for the Quakes in the 1980s after the old NASL folded. He also played as a reserve GK and forward with Quakes but mostly was with the San Jose Oaks and he was good friends with Ronnie Morriss which is what makes the story so unbelievable. Morriss also played on the Quakes and Oaks with him. Goldie as he was known, was assistant coach of Laurie Calloway on both the SF Bay Blackhawks and later, the SJ Clash in 1996-97. It's a very tragic and sad story.
I've met Dave Gold a couple times, and also talked with him on the phone, circa October 2023. I called him to get confirmation of a rumor I heard second-hand from Facebook (I'm not on Facebook). Gold is not Jewish, but evidently someone thought he was, because he confirmed to me that he woke up a couple weeks after the October 7 massacre to a note on his porch which read, "Die Jew." At the time, I had asked the Mayor and City Council to publicly condemn the antisemitism rampant at then. Most city council offices never responded. The Mayor's neighborhood affairs staffer asked me for details, and I got them from Gold, including putting him in contact with the Mayor's office.. As far as I know, nothing ever came of it -- certainly not any mayoral or council public condemnation of antisemitism.
Worth noting, in the spirit of innocent until proven guilty, Gold hasn't been charged with any crime. He was arrested "in connection with the June 6 murder" and has been released by the police pending further investigation. Dave Gold, who once played for the Quakes in the 1980s, was arrested in connection to a June 6 murder at an Almaden Valley home. Gold has since been released by police pending further investigation
Yeah, and describing it as a "murder" rather than a homicide seems overstated in light of the sketchy details reported thus far.
Something about that combination of nice curvy handwriting on a death threat and the worst Star of David (or a dyslexic swastika?? very confusing) ever made is raising eyebrows with the hindsight bias of the non-Jewish recipient now being involved (arrested and released) in a homicide investigation into the killing of his good friend and former assistant coach...
My father's friends called him Goldie, so that got my attention. It's not a nickname you hear very often. Reading the story -- including the fact that Dave was released -- suggests that his involvement might have been accidental/incidental. Thank you, Don.
Well there are different standards of proof. Police arrest a suspect based on probable cause, meaning facts or evidence that would lead a reasonable person to believe the suspect committed the crime. The case file they present to the DA has to present evidence that is legally sufficient for the DA to file formal charges (otherwise they may send it back for further investigation), based on a reasonable likelihood of conviction, based on their belief that the evidence is strong enough to prove the suspect's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial even though that isn't required yet. Sure maybe it was accidental/incidental, or maybe they didn't have enough evidence to charge him at the time and he will be arrested again when they do. Probability wise I'd put my money on the latter. Also last name plus y or ie at the end is an all too common nickname in sports.
Supposedly, even though Goldie and Ronnie were friends forever , they would fight often. I heard Ronnie had beat Dave up a few times but they would make up and remain friends which is odd. I’m not sure how it is possible to remain friends with someone who beats you up all the time or even once. Anyway, I heard they were arguing again and that was when Ronnie came after him and Dave shot him.
