Obviously when I see the British broadcasters anchoring the nightly sports news, I know that's from Britain. But when I see the Americans broadcasting (the chick with glasses is cute), I don't know where they're broadcasting from. Are they in Britain too? And why does Max Bretos do everything on that channel? And who is Max Bretos anyway? A former player, or just a football commentator? I like him a lot, I'm just wondering who he is.
Bretos, Hopkins, Miles, Elliott, Webster, Wheelock, and Harkes broadcast from 10000 Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles. However, the news program FOX Sports World Report is produced at the studios of CKND-TV (a.k.a. Global Winnipeg) on St. Mary's Road in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Why Winnipeg? Because FOX Sports World Canada (not owned nor operated by FOX, despite the name) is required to have 15% of its programming classified as "Canadian Content" under the terms of licencing imposed by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Unlike the US, Canada regulates the content of its cable channels heavily. Furthermore, the CRTC prohibits non-Canadian companies from owning a majority interest in Canadian TV channels. That's why FOX cannot own or operate FOX Sports World Canada. One way for Global TV, the owner of FOX Sports World Canada, to meet the "Canadian Content" requirement is to produce a nightly news program in Canada. The program was named Global Sportslink when it started in September 2001. Once FOX Sports World US decided to simulcast Global Sportslink, the program was renamed FOX Sports World Report. As for Bretos, he is a Cuban-American who lived as a child in Australia according to an interview in Soccer America a few years ago. He supposely played rugby at the club level in Southern California, and he also moonlighted at various SoCal night clubs as a comedian.
Re: Re: Where does Fox Sports World broadcast from? Interesting. Oliver, can you explain just what the business relationship is between Fox Sports World Canada and Fox, if there's no outright ownership?
Re: Re: Re: Where does Fox Sports World broadcast from? Global TV of Canada licenses the "FOX Sports World" brand and TV rights to programming from FOX Sports Int'l. FOX Sports World Canada originates from Winnipeg. Note that Global TV will also do deals with other programming providers, such as MLS. That's why FOX Sports World Canada will retransmit "MLS on ESPN2" each Saturday, complete with ESPN graphics.
Oliver, Somehow I got the impression that FSW is probably run by no more than a dozen or two employees. How far off is my guess?
Re: Re: Where does Fox Sports World broadcast from? Thanks for all the info. This tells me everthing I wanted to know, and then some.
Re: Re: Where does Fox Sports World broadcast from? this may be the most informative BigSoccer post ev er. kudos. and thank you
Re: Re: Where does Fox Sports World broadcast from? When I was reading this post and got to "Why Winnipeg?", that was exactly the question I was asking myself. But what I wanted to (and still want to) know is why Winnipeg, as opposed to Toronto or Vancouver or Montreal or Ottawa or Calgary. Or even Hamilton or Halifax. Why Winnipeg?
Re: Re: Re: Where does Fox Sports World broadcast from? Israel "Izzy" Asper, the executive chairman of Canwest Global Communications, the parent company of Global TV, is a resident of Winnipeg. Asper was the premier of the Liberal Party in the province of Manitoba from 1970 to 1975 and was elected twice to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. When the CRTC decided to allocate a 3rd VHF TV licence in Winnipeg, Asper decided to play hardball. The licence was allocated by the CRTC to VHF channel 12, which overlapped with the signal of a US station across the border, KCND-TV 12 in Pembina, North Dakota. Asper wanted to own the channel 12 licence in Winnipeg. Even though KCND-TV 12 was a US station, its target market was Winnipeg, as it so ads for Winnipeg businesses. Asper strong-armed his way into owning channel 12, when he threatened to overwhelm the signal of KCND-TV with the new channel 12 in Winnipeg. The owner of KCND-TV 12 was forced to sell out to Asper relatively cheaply in 1974. In 1975, Asper simply moved the station across the border and up the road to Winnipeg and changed the call letters to CKND-TV. When Asper's company, Canwest Communications, bought out the Global TV network, he decided to move the production of Global TV from Toronto to the CKND-TV studio complex on St. Mary's Road in Winnipeg. Asper also decided to build the production center for Global TV's digital specialty channels, including FOX Sports World Canada, at the CKND-TV complex. Winnipeg offered cheaper labor than Toronto. That's why FOX Sports World Report is produced in Winnipeg.
OK, da_cfo. Let's see you tackle this one. First, what does HAL mean? Second, what is the origin of O.K.?
Michelle Lissel is almost cute, but not quite. I want to call her cute, but put her up against the presenter babes from Skysports.com TV (most notably Kelly Dalglish) and she doesn't quite make the cut.
Re: Re: Where does Fox Sports World broadcast from? Michelle is cute. Kelly is cute. Kirsty Gallacher is hot. Why aren't you guys supporting me here? middle of page: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=50842&perpage=15&pagenumber=2
Yeah, a little funny looking. But in a very endearing way. Like the screamer in the new Amstel Light ads.
