And now the Sunnyvale See’s Candies (granted, it’s thankfully not the See’s Candies in Santa Clara that I grew up with that’s closing, but it’s still sad nonetheless) : “‘Like losing an old friend:’ Sunnyvale See’s Candies to close” (San Jose Mercury News - Wednesday, 5/7/25) See’s Candies store at 1238 W El Camino Real in Sunnyvale on May 7, 2025. The store will close May 11. (Photo by Stephanie Lam / Bay Area News Group) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
For what it's worth, Real Food Daily in LA also closed. Unfortunately for their health and the planet, vegan is no longer in vogue among Gen Z.
Not having been born in this area, I never understood the reverence and affection people had for that place. To me, it was the Harry's Hofbrau (another example) of bakeries. Very homogenized.
We have an American Pope! Pope Leo XIV (born Robert Francis Prevost, September 14, 1955) is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State since 8 May 2025. He served as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America since 2023. He previously served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023, and was prior general of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013. In 2015 Cardinal Prevost became a naturalized citizen of Peru as confirmed by Peru's National Civil Registry. On May 8, 2025, he was elected Pope, choosing the papal name Leo XIV, becoming the first Pope born in the United States, and the first from North America as a whole.
i know this is splitting hairs, but why call him an American Pope if he is a naturalized Peruvian citizen? Wasn't he probably elected by his peers because he would be a Peruvian Pope representing South America, not North America?
Reading his wikipedia page, it appeared he lived and was educated in Chicago area until he was 22, and his father was an American veteran. So I guess that makes him American in some sense, altho he's been in Rome or Peru ever since (almost 50 years). Do you know if he is considered to be conservative or liberal? My hubby wants to know...
I'm not sure. I'm listening to the Rai (Italian TV) network right now but they are saying he wants to keep and preserve the values of the Catholic Church. I don't think anyone can come in and change those values right away.
If you are a fan of Nick Rimando, MLS Journeymen had a great interview and he talks about his secret to stopping 59 PKs in MLS. That’s as many as Gordo’s goals scored. Also they explain why charter flights reduce team bonding. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/major-league-journeymen/id1685200482?i=1000706867550
There's all this talk about whether he's a White Sox fan or Cubs fan. I guess he's a Chicago Fire fan then, and maybe AS Roma? Lazio? Alianza Lima from his time in Peru?
