When I was a little kid the first baseball mitt I had was a Willie Mays "autographed" mitt. I remember when I was 6 years old playing catch with my older bother, and I would tell him, "don't throw the ball to me, throw it away from me so I have to work to catch it". Sometimes I would tell him to throw it over my head so I could emulate May's iconic back to home plate basket catch in deep centerfield in the 1954 World Series. A tip of the hat to the "Say Hey Kid" tonight, one of the greatest of all time.

It's not often that I can say that I'm "too young" for much of anything anymore, but I didn't see Willie Mays play at anywhere near his prime. In fact I'm not sure if I ever saw him play in person. I remember seeing him play on TV with the Mets and seemed like every time I watched he was striking out. I did see Willie McCovey some number of times. My friends and I would go to the games and sit in the stands along right field. McCovey would inevitably come up with the game on the line. Then he'd hit a ball into right field and we'd get excited for a short moment before seeing that it's a medium deep right field flyout. End of game.

At some point I decided I didn't like the Giants and didn't see them for a long time, but a friend had seats behind the plate for a game, and I went and saw Barry Bonds hit 2 ridiculous home runs over right center. Did see him pretty close to his prime.

Interesting. You never know what you might learn on BigSoccer. All I knew of Hagerstown was that it was the place to go to buy booze when we were kids living in Chambersburg, PA.

His era of greatness was mostly done by the time I got interested in baseball. My heroes were most of the late 1960s Cardinals (particularly Bob Gibson), Ernie Banks, and Roberto Clemente.

Would have liked to have seen Bob Gibson. My Cardinals heroes are from the Whitey Ball era.

After making it to the Stanley Cup finals last year, only to lose, the Florida Panthers got there again this year! Then they pulled ahead 3-0 on the Edmonton Oilers and only needed one more win to lift Lord Stanley’s Cup.

The Oilers had other plans and have now tied the series 3-3 forcing a deciding game 7, in Florida, on Monday.

@don gagliardi, what do you think? Edmonton completes an extraordinarily unusual 4 game comeback win (only happened twice in over one hundred years or something close) or, Florida gets to lift the cup in front of their home fans?

Missed the game tonight, so no recency evaluation, but I pegged Florida as the best team in the tournament from the beginning, so I’ll stick with them.

How many 3-0 series comebacks have there been in the NHL? Full list of Stanley Cup playoff miracles

Just four teams have successfully battled back from down three games to none to win a playoff series 4-3: . . .

Toronto Maple Leafs 1942 Stanley Cup Finals Detroit Red Wings

New York Islanders 1975 Stanley Cup Quarterfinals Pittsburgh Penguins

Philadelphia Flyers 2010 Eastern Conference Semifinals Boston Bruins

Los Angeles Kings 2014 Western Conference First Round San Jose Sharks

This was a dramatic one from my childhood. Islanders' first playoff appearance. Cinderella story. Almost did it in consecutive series, coming back from 0-3 to 3-3 before succumbing to the defending champs Broadstreet Bullies in the semifinals in seven games.

back when helmets were optional!

and seriously, I was thinking finals (just once then?), did you have to bring up Sharks vs Kings, Darryl Sutter, our old coach who I hated to see leave, kind of made a statement there.

Back even before Doug Wilson entered the league. :)

Still remember where I was for game 7 of the Islanders / Penguins series. Listened on the radio at my grandmother's house. Epic nail biter, with 1-0 final. Penguins hit several goalposts, and goalie Chico Resch said afterward that the goal posts were his friends. Almost always think of Resch whenever a shot hits the post, even in soccer fifty years on.
