Sams Soldier was speaking of this, included in this week's Wire from the Fed.

Jr. turns 17 this year. also eligible for 2007 U-20. i hope he's good tough. Jay Denny has been doing very well for Stoke U-19 and reserves.

WOW! That's big news, to me at least. I had spoken with George Weah Jr.'s uncle in New York last year and reported it on BS, tho it went mainly unnoticed. The uncle basically said that the kid has French and Liberian citizenship but was working on US as well. But I had no idea he was actually that close to getting it. The uncle also said that his dad wanted him just to lay low and work hard at Milan and not 'get his head too big.'

I'm thrilled to see him called in, and that he's got a US passport. (I guess I'm assuming too that he will respond to the call...)

I thought Champion Weah, his eldest, was signed by AC Milan? Or are they one and the same. He is different kids by different wives and I always get confused by this, even though there has already been threads about this already.

Yeah, she's from New York or Brooklyn. Weah sightings in NYC have been common over the last 5-10 years.

Has anyone seen George Jr. play or heard about his abilities? How big is he, what type of forward is he?

His name came up in a thread in Yanks Abroad.

Here's what I was able to find:

Now it looks as though this older George Weah Jr. is in fact an American. Good news, although, as mentioned on that Liberian board, he may end up playing for Liberia.

Maybe George Weah is like George Foreman and names all of his children George.

there's an article about this on ussoccer.com. i'm too lazy to post the link, but it's not hard to find. just like on wednesdays' articles i think. anyways, weah has two sons named george weah jr. how stupid is that.

  22. This may not be a done deal yet. On the ReggaeBoyz.com forum they say Jr.'s mom is Jamacian born.

I spoke to a source very close to the Weah family for a reply to a thread last August. This source said the Weah Jr. in question is NOT the son of Weah's current American wife. In August, the source had said that Weah Jr. had French and Liberian citizenship and was close to obtaining U.S. citizenship. He also said the kid had been living in the States for a couple of years after living a lot in Europe.

So to the best of my understanding, from a very reliable source, he is not the son of Weah's American wife. But I would assume that he has indeed received U.S. citizenship very recently.

Is Weah Senior a US citizen? Am I mistaken in thinking that Junior got his citizenship through Senior?

    Here's some more info:

    http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/NationalTeams/20040222195906

"Though he his very low key, Weah, Jr. knows what he is here for when he spoke about scoring the first time wearing a U.S. shirt: "It's a great feeling and experience because I know my coach is looking and a forward is supposed to finish and score goals to help the team win."

Weah, Jr., currently with the U18s of Serie A power AC Milan, is the son of George Weah, Sr., the 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year. Weah, Jr. is eligible to play for the U.S. due to his mother being a U.S. citizen. He could also play for the country of his birth - Liberia - and for France as his father holds dual French/Liberian citizenship.

With his appearance today Weah, Jr. is not "cap-tied" to the U.S. due to a FIFA statute that came into force on January 1, 2004. The statute allows youth players to play as a youth international for one country and then apply, prior to his 21st birthday, to play for another country. Even if Weah, Jr. plays for the U.S. U20s in an official FIFA event, such as CONCACAF U20 qualifiers and/or the FIFA World Youth Championship in 2005 and 2007, he would still be eligible to play for Liberia or France. If Weah, Jr. were to play in an "A" international match - or in other words, with the senior team - for the U.S. prior to turning 21 he would then be cap-tied to the U.S.

It does not appear on the surface that Weah, Jr. has plans to change is current allegiance to U.S. Soccer, even though the Liberian Association has approached him to play for their county.

"It would be pretty hard to go there because of all the problems in Liberia," said Weah, Jr. "I would be very happy to play for my county, for Liberia. But as far as the future I'd rather take the chance to play with America because their growing talent, like Freddy Adu and other players I've seen here."

Though it's only been two days that the U20s have been together, he is surprised at the talent and commitment of the U20s.

"I didn't think they would be this good," said Weah, Jr. and they are hard working, just like professionals."
