Which of these match-ups is the most expected, the most talked and has more history in the history of the World Cups? Discuss.
those are all great matchups that you have listed there, however i feel that two important ones have been left out. Holland vs Brazil have produced some amazing matchups. Quarterfinals in 94, and semifinals in 98 were both amazing matchups. Also, Holland vs Argentina has also produced amazing match ups. The final in 78 and the quarterfinal in 98 were also amazing matchups.
wow im sorry for hte over use of the term amazing matchups, i just read what i posted and that really annoyed me and i wrote it.. so 4 everyone sorry
Italy - Brazil in my opinion. They've met five times in WC history and on four of those occasions the team emerging victoriously has gone on to win the whole tournament. By reputation the best defensive nation vs the best attacking nation in the game. Immortal classics particularly 1970 and 1982, but also 1994 had huge drama even if there was no goals.
Killa, you've got too many questions here. Most expected? Depends on the next W/C draw. If you meant most anticipated, the same applies. We can't do either until there's a draw. EDIT: Never mind. I see now you're referring to past matches... my bad. But my vote wouldn't change, because of the history and greatness of the teams involved. Most talked about? In what country? But I voted Brasil v. Italy based on the history. If bad blood were a requirement, Argentina v. England would probably have to top the list, and Brasil wouldn't even make the poll.
Same can be said about England v Brazil 2002: Brazil 2-1 England 1970: Brazil 1-0 England 1962: Brazil 3-1 England 1958: Brazil 0-0 England
Only 1 vote(mine)for Germany v. Holland? Thats a shocker. With all the history between those teams it must be one of the greatest. England v. Brazil is good as well.
I voted Argentina vs England. People just cannot get over with Maradona's two goals in 1986 and Simeone/Beckham in 1998. Twenty years from now, we will be still talking about it. The Germany-Holland is also classic.... but they do not meet as much as the England-Argentina matchup. The 1994 game was a great game..... so were the 1974 Final. Brazil-England.... nothing much!!! They had not played for over 30 years in a WC match.

interesting to see that argentina dosnt have a winning record against brazil italy germany or england
I think it's Argentina-Brazil. This is a classic in many levels. Argentina-Brazil is a clasic in: - World Cup - U-23, U-20, U-17 World Cup and South American championship - Copa America - Copa Libertadores (their clubs) This two countries have a huge rivalry. In many most classics in european leagues argentinians and brazilians are very important part of the teams.
Which is why you can easily imagine that more than just a few Argentine fans weren't too happy on June 30, 2002.
I'm bored so I'll give you some facts about other fine WC classics. Maybe they are more interesting than some of the match-ups that didn't get any votes: Brazil x Holland: 1974: Holland 2 x 0 Brazil (2nd phase) 1994: Holland 2 x 3 Brazil (Quater-finals) 1998: Brazil 1 x 1 Holland (4 x 2 PKs) (Semifinals) Brazil: 1 Draw: 1 Holland: 1 France x Italy: 1938: France 1 x 3 Italy (Quater-finals) 1978: Italy 2 x 1 France (Group stage) 1986: Italy 0 x 2 France (Round of 16) 1998: Italy 0 x 0 France (3 x 4 PKs) (Quater-finals) Italy: 2 Draw: 1 France: 1 Germany x Italy: 1962: Italy 0 x 0 West Germany (Group stage) 1970: West Germany 3 x 4 Italy (Semifinals) 1978: West Germany 0 x 0 Italy (2nd phase) 1982: Italy 3 x 1 West Germany (Final) Italy: 2 Draw: 2 Germany: 0 Brazil x Spain: 1934: Brazil 1 x 3 Spain (Round of 16) 1950: Brazil 6 x 1 Spain (Final Group) 1962: Brazil 2 x 1 Spain (Group stage) 1978: Brazil 0 x 0 Spain (Group stage) 1986: Spain 0 x 1 Brazil (Group stage) Brazil: 3 Draw: 1 Spain: 1 France x Germany: 1958: France 6 x 3 West Germany (3rd place dispute) 1982: West Germany 3 x 3 France (5 x 4 PKs) (Semifinals) 1986: France 0 x 2 West Germany (Semifinals) Germany: 1 Draw: 1 France: 1 Argentina x Holland: 1974: Holland 4 x 0 Argentina (2nd phase) 1978: Argentina 3 x 1 Holland (Final) 1998: Holland 2 x 1 Argentina (Quater-finals) Holland: 2 Draw: 0 Argentina: 1 Brazil x France: 1958: Brazil 5 x 2 France (Semifinals) 1986: Brazil 1 x 1 France (3 x 4 PKs) (Quater-finals) 1998: France 3 x 0 Brazil (Final) France: 1 Draw: 1 Brazil: 1 Italy x Spain: 1934: Spain 1 x 1 Italy (Quater-finals) 1934: Spain 0 x 1 Italy (Playoff match) 1994: Italy 2 x 1 Spain (Quater-finals) Italy: 2 Draw: 1 Spain: 0
Now this poll is a joke. Two of the all-time greatest classics have been left out. Italy - Germany 4-3 (1970) Germany - France 3-3 (1982)
This thread is not about one specific game, it's about recurrent match-ups that also bring a lot of history and rivalry in the World Cup. But I would agree to take away the 2 match-ups that didn't get any votes so far, and replace them with other classics that have been repeatedly mentioned in this thread. (Maybe France x Germany and Brazil x Holland). That's if the mods of this forum are willing to do it.
