What's the best DVD Player I can snag for around $200?

Thanks to Santa, I am now the proud owner of a Panasonic SA-HE200 Home Theater Receiver:

It has DTSES and DolbyEX, for those 6.1 discrete fans.

So now I need a DVD player worthy of the receiver. I'd like to know what the a/v-philes think is a good "bargain" - priced DVD player.

What I'd like it to have (In importance order):

    1) VCD playback: I burn a lot of Sopranos/Simpsons and bootleg movies. Hopefully can watch Foos's Open Cup final when he has it ready to sell...

    2) I want it to be able to produce the 6.1 channels to work with my receiver. I am a little foggy on how/which outputs a dvd player needs for the receiver to produce the 6.1 discretes. Is a simple digital out fine for it?

    3) MP3 playback: I've never done this before, so I want to dick around with it. I'll need it for parties and such, too.

    4) Backlit Remote: As you can see with my receiver, its remote sucks. I want to compensate with having a nicely-lit remote.

    5) Clear Display/Silver Casing. I want it to look as pimp as the receiver amping its sound.

Thanks all. Of course, if any of you have good links on where to find said DVD player for cheapest, include that as well. :)

not trying to be a bitch here, but the $50-70 ones -- Apex, Orbitron, etc -- skip. you don't want to buy those. i would spend at least $150 if you want a quality piece of equipment. order of brands you should look for:

    1.JVC
    2.SONY
    3.PANASONIC

some people HAVE to have their receiver and dvd player match brands, i personally think that is overkill, not necessary. a jvc though is gonna be the best quality.

    Um, so yeah..

I'd like it to have progressive scan, as well. HDCD/SACD and region-free would be nice too.

70 dollar players are ************, most hardly come with good outs and ins.

I'm currently thinking the Sony DVP-NS715P would be a good choice.

I guess I'm fortunate, and I want to "invest" the money I got from christmas into something solid, not waste it on booze and cigs.

Now, I've found this for around 200, with shipping included:

Does the "R" means it records onto DVD?

No, it will playback DVD-R's and DVD-RW's. Some dvd players won't, kind of like how they won't play VCD's.

BTW, I bought my parents an Apex DVD player about a year and a half ago for $100 and it's worked flawlessly. It'll play VCD's and all the other discs, and it is also region free.

Yeah, I've heard of those. They are perfect for bootleg videos and such, a top player for that. Kiss (an English company) makes a high-end player for people who enjoy that, it even plays DivX encoded files, so you don't have to encode them into mpegs...

However, those also lack the good dolby and dts decoding outs, i believe. Keeps the price low...

BTW, it's ready now. Shipped out a bunch before Christmas. They work just fine on my player, tho the quality is a little grainy.

opencup@guilfoos.com if you want one. Five bucks for materials and shipping.

i bought one for around $150 in May. RCA model, single disc, can play DVDs, music CDs, MP3 cds, VCDs,

Yeah, $200 is seems pretty much top of the line.

I also heard you may not want to go with a 5 disc, unless you plan on hooking it up to a home theater and using for a cd changer, just because "you can only watch one movie at a time, and it's more parts to break" as I heard it.

FWIW, I've also heard to stay away from the VHS/DVD combo units as well. If one unit breaks and it needs, or sent in for repairs, you've obviously lost the other unit.

A Panasonic progressive scan DVD player is the way to go. Good value for the money. Panasonic RP 56, RP-62 or RP 82. Anyone for around 200 or less.

I got an Apex from my inlaws last year. I've never had a single problem with it. I think it costs about $65-75.

I'm not getting the feedback I need to make the best purchase. I told you guys, I know the Apex's are good for bootleg movies, but they lack the quality outs and prog scan. No A/V Wizards here with a bargain buy for a top player?
