I'm trying to find the link to a Washington Post article that analyzed the trends in unemployment and figured that there's an ongoing cycle--people are laid off, get a job the next month, and then somebody else gets laid off. The "unemployment pool" isn't static, it's very dynamic. The upshot is the recession is both broader and deeper than what we expected, and the recovery isn't really taking place--it's just shuffling around the workforce. That or unemployment has skyrocketed, and we just caught somebody cooking the numbers ...
I believe we will find that this upsurge can be traced to South Dakota where these fictional farm workers also registered as Tom Daschle democrats.
