There's a new book just out on Columbus and his legacy; the author makes a reasonably convincing argument that Columbus just isn't as important, paradigm-shifting, nor unique (neither uniquely heroic and visionary NOR a uniquely evil and destructive historical agent) as made out to be. He was...typical of his time, made a voyage that wasn't qualitatively that different from many other similar explorations at the same time, made 'discoveries' which were less solely his than the legend would have--and certainly would have shortly been made by others if he hadn't stumbled across them first--and was less a driver of the worst excesses of European colonialism than just another bystander/participant.
This thread got me thinking about a legit question: Why do we have Columbus Day? Turns out President Harrison decreed it as an olive branch to the Italian community after several Italians were lynched in New Orleans following a period of anti-Italian rhetoric. It’s beyond ironic to read this proclamation from Trump when the whole reason we even have the holiday is because of anti-immigrant sentiment that precipitated anti-immigrant violence.
Reviews of this book overwhelmed my RSS feed a couple of months ago. So Columbus is an everyman, the very antithesis of the Great Man of History. But that can be written about just about every exploration, discovery, invention, accomplishment in human history: that if this person hadn't existed, someone else would do so pretty quickly. If Gutenberg hadn't invented movable type, someone else would have done so in the next decade. If Michaelangelo had held firm and not painted the Sistine Chapel, the Pope would have gotten someone else, and while it may not have been as great, it would still be incredible because there were lots of good painters and it's a whole freakin' ceiling. Salk created the polio vaccine, but if he didn't Sabin created a live-virus vaccine just a couple of years later. OJ Simpson rushed for 2000 yards. Big deal. 2000 yards has been eclipsed eight times since. I think being first matters, so I will give the credit to the frontrunners.

The latest defense bill (!?) includes a provision giving the Lumbee Tribe recognition. If this goes through, this means within the next decade, there’s gonna be a big ol’ casino, probably not far from South of the Border (iykyk), on I 95. This will be bad for the Cherokee, who have opposed federal recognition for the Lumbee for this very reason, as many folks who now go to the Qualla Boundary for their gambling needs will find the near-certain Lumbee casino more convenient. The movie Blue Velvet is set in Lumberton NC, but it’s nothing like the real Lumberton. I think David Lynch thought it sounded like the kind of town he wanted to set the movie in; there’s an early joke where the LUMBERton radio station is WOOD. Get it? But the fictional Lumberton isn’t a triracial community, to put it mildly.
No doubt he deserves a mention in history. The point of the book is that over the past 500 years, Columbus the person has been shrouded in a spectrum of myths so that the historical Columbus has carried a lot of cultural weight. There aren't heated arguments about Neil Armstrong's legacy, for example. The author argues that Columbus is neither the transformative great hero of hagiography, nor was the horrid monster responsible for kicking off the genocide of the Americas nor was he responsible for the expansion of slavery throughout the Atlantic World. That's the difference between Columbus versus the other famous figures you mention--for all of them, we have a reasonably good idea who they were and what they did. But it turns out that once you start digging past the myths and commonly held misconceptions, we know a LOT less about Columbus than you would think. And those gaps have largely been filled in with myths which have blown him up to be a mythic figure--sometimes a transformative genius, sometimes a malevolent destroyer; neither version seems to match with what little we actually know about the man and his era. I read it because it was assigned to me (I review pre-publication history books for an American Library Association publication)--my initial reaction prior to reading was actually similar to yours, but I have to admit the author taught me a lot. I really didn't know how much we DON'T know about Columbus.

There was a great Mexican movie on that topic, Sueno in otro idioma. My Anthropological linguistics prof at Wyoming was teaching the Shoshone how to speak Shoshone. We once asked her how many languages she could speak. Her response was "only 6 fluently, but I can get by in 80 or so". She would rip out of the air sentences in Turkish, Icelandic and even Rapanui. She truly inspired me to be better with my language abilities. She was the hardest professor I ever had, but also the best. She once gave me a D+ on a paper, which shocked me. I went up and asked her about it and her response was "you can do better". It was clear she was going to grade me based on my potential, not a curve based on what other students did.

Believing in federalism isn’t necessarily stupid and reactionary and evil and racist and stupid. But as it is practiced today, it is all of those things, so much so that I had to write “stupid” twice. I probably should add another evil and a racist.
