i heard the mls is suppose to come to Canada, is this true? i hope so, id really like to watch some games down here. if anyone knows whats going on, please let me know! thx
you have an a-league team. watch them and one day you might get your own league. MLS is not for canadians.
You know, cause Canadians just are not special enough to share in our soccer league! Sorry, this attitude just bothers me. If they ever build their 30,000 seat stadium, let them come, if not screw em. Just like everyone else.
1+2 = MLS in Toronto 1. Investor operator willing to sustain losses + 2. soccer specific stadium = MLS franchise in Toronto. Substitute any other city for Toronto in USA or Canada if 1+2 come together.
i thought FIFA was against the idea of multiple countries in one top-flight league. how happy will you be when canadian teams are taking MLS spots for the CCC? let them have their own MLS. it will be easier/better for them.
Well, maybe if they were top-class in the A-League, we could consider them. Don't take this the wrong way. I love canadian soccer, and I wish they had a full top-flight of their own, but first they gotta kick ass in the one they already are in. Once the Impact, the 86ers, the Lynx, etc... win something, then we def. should consider them. I also hope Edmonton does well next year. I mean having the biggest mall in the world, why not having the best team in Canada????
Make you a deal: Make Jacques Chretien run naked through the streets of Toronto at noon squawking like a chicken, and we'll let you have a team. Beat him with sticks and you can have two.
This is an interesting subject. If a canadian side goes to the final and wins the final wouldn't that be intersting? True it isn't right for another team competing in another countries soccer league. However this happens in Australia with 1 team from New Zealand. As people may be aware they are restructuring the NSL and many people in Oz believe that The Football Kingz (NZ) are wasting a spot in the NSL and is not right for another country to enter another's national league. But with Canada and the USA this could be different. You have Canada in the NBA & NHL do you not? Well I couldn't see the problem for MLS either. But the issue of 2 countries involved in another's league is a hot topic to handle.
The Edmonton team in the A-League is set to have a budget of around $2 Million Cdn. The Montreal Impact, which are a non-profit entity, has a budget of about $1.5 Million. Ottawa is hoping to join in 2005. The big problem with having an MLS team in Canada is that it would turin into another 1983 Montreal Maniac side.
Joined league in Austria and Switzerland Hi, they plan a joined leage in Austria and Switzerland, so I do not see why FIFA would be that against it. The sad thing is that with all north american sports it is first of all business, then business, and when there is no business, then they deal with the sports. Without some substantial cash flow professional sports are not possible, that's true. But to make a franchise investor to be the precondition for any professional sports ruins many chances. It is different in Europe where all professional teams are either regular clubs or affiliates of regular clubs. So they are no different than the bridge club, the gardening fans, or an austrian heritage association. I propose to work with the Canadian soccer association in order to encourage the foundation of (amateur) soccer clubs that are self-reigned. What one needs is some flat field, some players, some markers, and a ball. Form a league and play, form some more leagues and have promotion and degration, select the best teams and form a semi-professional league, form a pro-league and you get what you are looking for. Yes, I roughly described a process that takes about 10 to 15 years, but it is possible and longer lasting than a franchise system that can move teams across the nation or just close them entirely. It will also help to get more local support other than a planted team that has nothing to do with the region.
FIFA may have a different view on the matter. They likely see Canada and the US wealthy enough that a unified league is out of the question. Same may go for the Swiss and Austrians. The Canadian system is far different than what's in Europe. Throwing everything out and starting over would do more harm than good.
Unified Leagues Hi, I recently came across a website about the socceroos in Australia. Australia and New Zealand already have a unified league.
It's not so much a unified league, though. Only one club from NZ plays in the Australian "Prem". That's FC Auckland Kingz, I believe its name is? All other NZ clubs play in a NZ league, rather.
Kingz actually answers to Soccer Australia in all matters. As would be the case if a Canadian or Mexican teams were to join MLS. The USSF would have the final say.
I agree with that, obviously. What my point was, and in my opinion it was horribly clear, was that the lad was incorrect by saying that Australia and NZ have a unified league. It's just a good amount of Aussie clubs, plus only one from NZ.
