Wow. I've not seen anything so pitiful looking in my life. Is this a closed match? Did they sell tickets, or just invite friends and family?
Tonight's Galaxy vs. Rapids match at Invesco. Currently in the 13th minute as I type. MLS has got to do something about playoff attendance. This is just sad looking.
Colorado Rapids 2003 home playoff game: 6,434 Maybe they'll set a new low. Also, LA has a more exciting team, more star players, a better stadium, and better fans. I don't how anyone who's neutral could hope that the Rapids advance.
I'm 'watching' the match on the radio -- sounds like more than 114 -- is it really that bad or does it just look its usual empty self cause of its size? It is friday night -- most people don't associate that with -- 'ohh lets go see soccer' -- how well have they marketed the game and that they are in the playoffs and all that?
its cold and goes against other sports, and school is on, and lots of kids play soccer on saturdays, and ...etc, if only the season started in Sept and conclude in July, would put the playoffs in a better position.
Friday night should be great! pre-game Alcohol! Soccer! post-game Alcohol! What's wrong with these people??
I doubt there was even a postage stamp sized ad in the paper, radio, or TV advertising. Rapids fans are pretty loyal, I just think this format breeds apathy. Have single elimination. It'd take 3 weeks for the playoffs and every match would be life or death.
definetly, on the other hand the home teams next weekend will have 2 weeks to promote and sell tickets, and i can predict the average attendance will be a lot bigger for the return leg
for tomorrows Metro -DC game 1.heard the weather report on ABC radio sponsored by the Metrostars 2.received a phone call from the Metrostars reminding me of tomorrows game 3. our paper the Star Ledger had an 8 page pull out section about the playoff game
Fantastic! I only made an assumption about Colorado's situation, and as the saying goes, when you assume... I hope for (and expect) a better turnout for the Metros.
Good point. Although it ain't Texas, HS Football is a Friday night institution in most places. For kids and adults.
positive I'd take ouf of it if Colorado advances is maybe a little help for the Commerce City SSS vote (hopefully it's a shoe-in anyway). i'd naturally support the Rapids but for the good of MLS I'm not sure I want the next round to possibly be in Colorado vs LA if SJ advances
Maybe they could trick people into thinking this is HS football. Already got the lines on the field. Ending the season in August is sounding a little better. But apparently others don't want late winter games in the snow. Sounds like fun to me.
Don't need to change the season to Aug - May, or put bigger ads in the paper. But DO need to get all MLS teams out of oversized, football-lined stadiums. It's crap to watch on tv and crap to watch live, that's why there's nobody there. The return leg of this match up will have 27,000 at the Home Depot Center.
Dont know how many metro fans will turn out, but there are two completly full buses of DC fans headed up..
That should be a fun ride! At least this match is televised -- the radio commentary is mik'd very well -- sounds like a 2-5 thousand which still isn't good but...
Please god, can someone teach this league how to build a fan base... A team with this few fans gives can even a playoff off game a depressing feel. I'll be back in a bit, I am heading out the morgue to cheer up...
Now DC/NY is the only real big rivalry in the east. The Fire/Burn/FC Dallas rivalry is close, but it seems to have subsided a bit with realignment. I hope Chivas and Real SLC will help create more rivalry. I know there's some heat between most eastern teams, but the west could use a kick outside LA/SJ. I think Everyone will hate Chivas, certainly the Galaxy and 'Quakes will, and besides Colorado, I think most everyone will hate SLC, just because, well they're SLC. Once the footprint expands to 14 in 2006 I think enough of the country will be covered to create real rivalries, and more rabid fan interest. If MLS keeps plugging along TV interest and a certain "coolness" factor will set in too. Let's just be patient and do what we can to support the league as it continues to grow.
