Since we have a Fitz thread. It seems time to wonder what happend to some of the ex. Crew players. Anyone know where Big John Debrito is now? How about my fav - AAAAANNNNNSSSSIIIIIIILLLLL EEEELLLLLLCCCCCOOOOCCCCKKKKKKK. (Gumby -in Black and Gold !)
John DeBrito was last with Dallas I think. Dominic Schell is playing for the El Paso Patriots in the A-League. I think Elcoock is playing third or fourth division in England. Jason Farrell is with the Seattle Sounders. Mario Gori and Matt Chulis are with the Pittsburg Riverhounds. Matt Napolean played with Portland Timbers. Speaking of those great youngsters that Fitz didn't give a chance, I don't think Mario Longo or Kevin Addams played last year. The Doctor got shot up in South Africa, he's ok...I think. I took Rzepa out back behind the woodshed to put him out of his misery
Rob lives in Powell and teaches at 2 private schools, I believe. He's also doing some youth soccer coaching. He looks as young and toe-headed as always (just bumped into him recently) and has 2 kids.
I was late getting to one of Lefty's HS games this fall. As I was walking accross the parking lot, they were just finishing up away introductions and the announcer says "...and Assistant coach Ansil Elcock" Lefty says it wasn't him, but how many Ansil Elcock's can there be? I never got a good look at him - when soocer is played on a field inside the running track, you're just too far away.
As is Brian Winters. He was drafted, but I don't think ever dressed for a Crew game. I believe Dominic Schell played there as well. Billy Thompson is coaching HS girls soccer in Columbus. Todd Yeagley left (or is leaving) his job with the Crew office to go back to Indiana. Mike Lapper is working in the Crew offices.
We might see a MLS return for Napolean. Colorado is very interested in him and he had a solid year with the Timbers.
good deal.. he has been called up to both colorado and i believe dallas since he was released by columbus. not that it helps any, but on November 5th, Colorado GK David Kramer was released in anticipation of Scott Garlick's return. The rapids' coach said that he hoped to have the #2 spot used by some "younger competition".
How about "Sneaky Pete" Marino? One of Fitz's only role players (a weakness of his IMO). He traveled around the league quite a bit. Also Ricky Ricardo Irribarren. One our 4 defenders with "attitude" in Crew history (Clark, McCarty, and Lapper being the other 3 I consider in that category). I loved the Lapper - Diallo matchups and would like to have seen all 4 in the same back line. Bring it on baby! Adrian Paz - Mr. offside trap himself. Whereabouts?
I am pretty sure that Adrian Paz retired after the 2000/01 and that he finished his career with his boyhood club, Bella Vista, in Uruguay.
Ansil Elcock had a trial at Barnsley but I don't think he caught on, last I heard he was playing for San Juan Jabloteh in Trinidad & Tobago.
And Iribarren was playing at Pittsburgh last I heard. So what's this Rob Smith being my hero stuff? (and I think it's tow headed not 'toe headed'... that's just wierd) Did anyone else notice that one of the asst. referees at the Open Cup Final looked like a dead ringer for RS?
Ricky was one of my favorites. I was very surprised when they waived him. He's been with the Riverhounds for two years and just resigned for next year, which figures to be his last. http://www.riverhounds.com/pr121002.htm
Billy and Rob run the "European Soccer Academy" in Columbus. It has a very good reputation. I stand corrected on the "toe-head" mispelling. I've heard the expression numerous times, but I had never seen it spelled. I have to laugh now that I look at it. Todd left Columbus in November to return to Bloomington. I was told that he would train under his father for a year. No promises that Todd will be hired to step-in to fill his dad's shoes at IU when he retires. Irabarren, Gori, Chulis, and the infamous Phil Karn all play for the Riverhounds now. Jason Farrell spent some time with the Galaxy, but has played well for Seattle. Dominic Schell plays for El Paso. Mario Longo plays for the Carolina Dynamo. So what ever happened to David Winners? I occasionally bumped into him at Obetz, and saw him subbing for various MLS teams until recently.
hang will have to confirm this, but I believe Winners is the guy we ran into at my alma mater, Butler University here in Indy. If this is who it was, he's coaching here.
Todd Yeagley is getting some experience working for his father, but IU's next coach - as recommended by Jerry Yeagley - will most likely be Jerry's right-hand man (whose name I can't remember).
Hey, did you know that the distance of the free throw line and the height of the basket from the floor at Butler Fieldhouse is exactly the same as the dimensions in the gym back at Hickory?
Just to reiterate FF ('cause FF don't mind no reiteratin" around here) Jerry Yeagley's Assistant for a couple decades now, Mike Freitag, is widely considered to be a big reason behind IU's success on the field. A former IU Captain and All American, he has had numerous opportunities to get head jobs elsewhere but has repeatedly chosen to stay at IU. Just last month College Soccer Weekly named him the Top Assistant Coach in NCAA Div I. He will be the next Indiana Head Coach. He's worked for it, he's earned it and Todd Yeagly would be the first person to tell you so. Todd's gonna spend a year working next to his dad before he retires. That's pretty cool. But that's ALL it is. Indiana University is NOT the CESA U 15's, and it really takes just a WEE tad more experience than a year hanging around with your dear old Daddy before you get hired to Coach one of the USA's elite soccer programs. As for our old friend David Winner whom everybody recalls so fukkin fondly that they keep calling him Winners instead of Winner, he is one of the all time great tales in MLS. He was drafted by the Crew and also played for the Fusion and of course KC, but the REAL story is that he was the official MLS backup keeper. Every time somebodie's keeper was hurt they'd bring Winner up from the Indiana Blast or wherever and have him sit the bench for a game or two. Somebody told me that they had counted EIGHT different teams he had suited up for. I can't verify this, but it's probably correct. Since MLS keeps no record of who was on the bench, and most of the time the guy was just there for insurance and didn't play it's hard to prove. Either way, he finally retired, IIRC, last summer. Great guy too.
