I have been getting this doubt about R Costa having a place on the National Team starting 11 for a wile. I'm also starting to feel that Figo's time is almost up. I believe Euro 2004 will be the last of Figo, Rui Costa. I still believe they will contribute to club teams and there is no doubt they will still be world class players. However, I doubt there will be any place for the two on our NT,¡Kespecially with our young players coming up like Quaresma, Deco. One more thing, I would put Meira instead of Andrade. But your lineup does sound interesting with Postiga and Pauleta upfront.
Yeah, in my view we need speed and strenght up front and Postiga (in my view) is just the guy for it. As for the back four, Meira is a very good choice. We also need speed ( disaster against the USA in the world cup). i think the back four is our weaker side and Scolari knows it...that is why Portugal should allways play with a defense mid like Costinha, Petit, or Tiago.
Are you kidding? Rui Costa is very inconsistent and always has been throughout his entire career but besides that if you put any other of these Portuguese players who currently play in Portugal into Milan's lineup vs Inter they would have done the same or even less.
well, we don't know how any other player listed above would do in Milan because the only way to know is if they actualy played in Milan. therefore you are just speculating. I think you may had missed my point!!! Rui Costa is an excellent player, don't get me wrong and if he is playing well, i agree with you that he has a spot in the NT. I just don't think at the moment is playing well enough for the playmaker Position on the NT. i personally think Deco is playing better in the same position right now, and so does Postiga as a forward. BTW, i'm not a Porto's fan, i'm a Benfica's fan.
I am not even Portuguese, I am Italian but live in a Portuguese community here in Toronto so I follow the Portuguese league along with the Italian league. But lets get realistic here. Who is Postiga and Deco playing against? Sure they are playing well, they are playing for the top Portuguese team and pretty much dominant the league. The Portuguese league is not that great and when these players move on to play elsewhere we will get to see if they really are good or great or just another flop. Look at Nuno Gomes, after moving to Fiorentina for 2 years I think he scored a total of 8 or 9 goals in total. He just stunk, I watched him often and he was completely useless. He was almost scoring at will for Benfica before the move and now that he is back in Benfica he is completely lost. He has lost all confidence and might need another year or two to return back to his form. But he was never good in the first place, he was good in the Portuguese league and then had a good couple of games in the Euro2000, but besides that he is just your average Portuguese striker. After watching Deco, Derlei, Viana, and Simao....I think they are good and have talent but until we see them move on and abroad we will really see what they are made of!
Postiga, Deco etc are playing against teams like Lazio, Phanatinaikos, Lens, etc. and Porto is in the UEFA cup final. I think these players proved they are capable of playing among the best in Europe. Look, we are giving our opinion in the starting 11 for Portugal's national team. Every one agrees that we should get the players that are playing well and in form which i think the would help the team better. We cannot go around and choose players just based on the clubs they are playing for. we should get the ones that are currently playing better. Players come and go all the time and no player is immune to it even if you are Figo or Rui...
You are dreaming. Rui Costa and Luis Figo are Top 10 players in the world. If not Top 10 then Top 15. Postiga and Deco are nothing yet and even though they look promising they can still fold like a cheap suitcase. A Portugal lineup without Figo and Costa would not be their best lineup. Figo and Costa are world class players. The players you have to get rid of for good and never call back are: Joao Pinto and Jorge Costa. They are both horrible and I dont know how they had the Portuguese jersey on their back!
Dude if you follow Portuguese soccer you probably know that Jorge Costa retired from the National team and Joao Pinto has not been called at all....and i don't think you are giving these other players a chance!!!!! a Portugal lineup without Figo won against Brazil!!!!!!!
I know that Jorge Costa retired and that Joao Pinto was not called back. THIS IS MY POINT, Jorge Costa retired because he was not going to get a chance to play again and Joao Pinto was not called back BECAUSE they finally got a coach with a brain in his head! And the win over Brazil was a friendly, don't look at that. Friendlies don't mean jack! Figo is still the best Portuguese player today!
Friendlies, don't look at that!!! what else we gonna look at? we are not qualifying for 2004, we only have friendlies to look at...i think they are important, it gives a chance for the coach to see how players are playing and try new players, etc..... You don't get an argument out of me about Figo. I agree is the best Portuguese player and i think is playing well at right now and he is in my lineup.

Why do you have Nuno Gomes starting with Pauleta on the bench? Nuno Gomes can't buy a goal meanwhile Pauleta has won back to back player of the year awards in France???
