My last spot which will undoubtedly draw universal criticism is either Chris Sutton or Kevin Philips. Sutton had a crap year at Chelsea, but I think he's a great player and could be a good foil to Owen (as he is with Larsen). He's also got the versatility to be used at the back in a crunch. Philips has good ball skills, has been playing well lately and has range. I don't think either one has been given a fair test for England. To further add to my criticism, I think Rooney should only be used as a second-half sub. He's not mature enough to handle the adrenalin attached to the competition. I don't think it's too hard to imagine him getting a stupid red-card for chasing someone down.

So I would have Carragher in for Southgate if Southgate doesn't recover in time. If Southgate is fine then I would replace Glenn Johnson with Carragher.

I would take Dyer ahead of Wright-Phillips fitness permitting because Dyer has more experience and versatility.

I'm tempted to take Vassell ahead of Defoe, but Defoe is in better form and fitness and more of a goalscorer, which we need.
