As reported by MLSsoccer.com today, Steve Nicol has been relieved of his duties at New England after 10 years. Not surprising to anyone.

Where do he, and NE, go from here? Was the mess this year really his fault?

Personally, I hope he can get a job at a team that is actually willing to spend on players. We've seen what he can do when he has talent. Maybe Chicago will take him if Klopas doesn't stick around at coach

Is it crazy to think Vancouver might want him? 10 years experience, couldn't go much further down from where they are and they have no head coach currently...

better then 50% chance it happens (IMO)

Vancouver already hired a coach a few months ago, Martin Rennie.

Maybe he will be doing in Montreal what Paul Mariner is doing in Toronto.

Maybe NBC (Versus) couldn't get Ray Hudson for color commentary so they went for Stevie Nicol instead.

id trade Warzycha for him without even thinking twice. have to respect what Nicol has done over the years with a complete lack of support from the owner of the club

The guy looks too much like Drew Carey. Give him his own sitcom and game show.

Has Liverpool ever expressed an interest in bringing him in as a staff member?

He has been a pundit on Press Pass on and off for years so maybe he will get a more permanent position at ESPN. He was even used as a color commentator on a few occasions a couple of years back.

Tom Sohen came down from the GM/Technical Director role to be interim manager. They hired Rennie from the NASL's Carolina Railhawks, I believe.

not sure what's happening with Klopas (whether he stays on as coach or back to TD), but the coach-search was stated that they will find a coach with previous MLS experience. Regardless of what he does, im sure he'll have options

maybe stevie could take over the position of TS in vancouver-- could be a great decision by the Caps management to hire some1 who has credibility, respect and solid judgement of players-- nichols had very good results in MLS with the Revs-- being a coach in NE must have been very difficult when one considers the disinterest of the owners

With Kenny there, it could be a happy reunion. Assuming he'd be interested in moving back to the UK that is

    Perhaps as assistant to Klinsi?

Colorado may need a coach if they relieve Smith of his duties after the season which is expected at least in some quarters (due in part to his dispute with Bravo the GM).

Maybe they'll go after Nicol to replace Smith?

I just hope he goes to a great place. Did a wonderful job with 0 support for 10 years and deserves something special.

Wouldn't ability to speak recognizable English be a prerequisite for this job?

This is classic. To be able to be funny with the lettering and no sound takes skill.

the disturbing thing is that my Scottish cousins actually do render "don't/didn't" as "dinny" and "can't" as "canny" on Facebook

Someone elsewhere mentioned that he'd make a fine TD for someone if he wants to take a break from coaching.

If I were the Dynamo, I'd hire him in a heartbeat. That man can recognize talent.

Typing in Scottish is easy. You just spell it exactly as it sounds.

Guuaaan, beg maan, gie ett a trrey. Ah nooe ye ken due ett!

Funny you say that. The consensus of a lot of Revs fans is that he'd either lost that ability, or he had been lucky in the past, or was unlucky in the recent past. Take your pick, but none of them are good options.

It's true that he did draft quite a few good players who were the core of the best Revs teams, like Noonan, Dempsey, Parkhurst, Dorman (who was in the6th round). He also drafted a lot of head-scratchers.

He also had a habit of taking poorly calculated risks. When they weren't sure if Twellman would come back from his concussion, they wisely decided on a plan B if he couldn't. That was Janko, who was an older player with injury concerns. If they signed him 5 years earlier when he was with Porto, I'm sure he was a hell of a player, but he was always injured. When your backup plan needs a backup plan, it's not a good sign. Meanwhile, there was no cap room left to make any moves.

Then the same thing happend with the 2 older French guys, Dabo and Domi, niether of whom lasted the season. Psycho Lekic was a decent pickup, but he isn't suited to playing as a lone striker. It seems that everyone but Nicol recognized this. The fact that the Revs had lost so many points from blown leads - led the league in goals allowed after the 80th minute - somethign was missing.

A change needed to be made, but nothing is going to change until the rotten core or the organization is cleared out. Nicol had gone to South America and came back with a list of 20 players. The FO rejected every single one of them. Why waste the time to even do that if you won't agree to the kind of money a good MLS player will want?

Meanwhile, the Revs are going into the offseason without a decision maker on players, so even in the best of curcumstances, that will mean that it's highly unlikely that they will have all the key players they need at the start of the season.
