What movies or TV shows over the years have people playing soccer? Maybe we can get a good list going... I'll start- for those that remember the original Karate Kid- had the teenage boys playing soccer on the beach and in high school. The cartoons on Disney Channel my kids watch always have kids playing soccer- Dora, etc. What do you guys have? The oldest one is the winner.... (If this needs to move to Soccer in the US forum please do so)
"Victory" aka "Escape to Victory" in 1981 is the earliest movie that I can remember revolving specifically around soccer. Monty Python had a memorable soccer sketch from 1974:
SSS (Soccer Specific Shows) that I can remember: Escape to Victory. Bend it like Beckham. Goal! Trilogy. What else?
Good replies--- just wanted to clarify that this doesn't have to be soccer specific movies. It can be just a scene where people are playing soccer-- like the Karate Kid.
just off the top of my head and not already mentioned: focus on soccer: ladybugs kicking and screaming the big green a soccer scene: my science project (movie) king of the hill (a soccer episode) simpsons (at least 3 episodes) dead poets society modern family home improvement man, woman, child (obscure martin sheen movie from early 80s, I only remember the soccer scene) private Benjamin (movie, referenced playing soccer and character seen in uniform IIRC) As good as it gets (referenced) Its your move (80s tv series) I may come up with some more later.
I prefer the scene where Casey (I think) is complaining about the scoring in soccer and how it can be improved and Issac points out that they have a contract with MLS and he should shut up.
Playing for Keeps - Gerard Butler as an ex-liverpool, rangers and DC united player. District 9 - Has a scene where the guy walks into Cape Town Stadium - Ajax Cape Town is playing at the moment. Green Street Holigans - has a plot but it features West Ham Supporters Rivalry with other "firms" mostly Millwall. I can think of many more but I will others comment. P.S. Since it was already mentioned - The Goal trilogy is my favorite although the 3rd one sucked! P.S.S.* - My pick for oldest movie that I recall of is 'Yesterday's Hero' with Ian Mcshane - old brit actor - I think his dad played footy or someone in his family - I don't remember it well but my pops used to love that movie.
A Shot At Glory - American owned lower-league Scottish team makes a run to the FA Cup final in order to save the club from being moved to Dublin (yeah, that part makes no sense). Robert Duvall plays the manager, Ally McCoist plays his son, the high-priced striker brought in by the owner, Michael Keaton plays the American owner. Particularly notable, for me, as Palmerston Park was the filming location for may of the in-game scenes and many of the Queen of the South players played extras on either of the teams.
Tim Allen TV series - Last Man Standing - Much like Home Improvement he has a child that is really into soccer. This time it is a daughter. They talk about it a lot and show her practicing soccer and show videos of her playing games. This is a very underrated show by the way. It is my favorite current show but I rarely hear people talk about it. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999 movie) One Fine Day (1996 movie) Miracle Match...aka...The Game of Their Lives (2005 movie) this movie is impossible to find. It is about the 1950 US soccer team that beat England
The actor that played Tim's son is actually one of the U.S. players in Game of Their Lives. They made his son a soccer kid because the actor was a decent soccer player. IIRC he played college soccer for a while.
Yeah. I knew this, but have been unable to get my hands on the movie. I think you can buy a dvd off of Amazon. I wish I could find it somewhere to stream.
Netflix had the DVD, at least back in 2010 as I got it from them to watch the night before USA-England.
It's from "Golden Gordon" which was an episode of Michael Palin's "Ripping Yarns" Every English fan over the age of 40 should know word for word. Unfortunately it's not on youtube. BARNSTONEWORTH! BARNSTONEWORTH!
The 2nd episode of Todd Magaret this year had a guy who looked a LOT like Manuel Neuer and was a goalie in an advertisement. His name was "Tim Dempsey" It was a kind funny scene.
