I started a poll on this before the crash, so here goes again. The VERY early returns had several people pick Real Madrid to fail to earn CL spot next year.

Remember, how you do in the CL this year has NO bearing on whether you come back next year with the exception of the Champion -- they get in automatically.

The Champion's League spots are strictly based upon the finals standings of the domestic leagues.

Positions earning automatic entry to the CL group phase are in bold. Positions earning entry into the 3rd round of Qualifying are underlined. Positions going to the Uefa Cup are in italics.

    Spain
    thru 14 of 38 games
    1) Real Sociedad -- 32 pts
    2) Valencia -- 28 pts
    3) Real Madrid -- 24 pts
    4) Celta Vigo -- 24 pts
    5) Deportivo -- 23 pts
    6) Mallorca -- 23 pts
    7) Betis Sevilla -- 23 pts
    8) Atletico Madrid -- 21 pts
    13) Barcelona -- 16 pts

Real Madrid has a game in hand. Barcelona is in real danger of missing out of Europe completely, let alone get in the CL again.

    Italy
    thru 14 of 34 games
    1) AC Milan -- 32 pts
    2) Lazio -- 31 pts
    3) Inter -- 30 pts
    4) Chievo Verona -- 26 pts
    5) Juventus -- 26 pts
    6) Bologna -- 26 pts
    7) Parma -- 22 pts
    8) AS Roma -- 20 pts

Roma is currently outside the top 4, but by only 6 points. However, based upon the current form of Lazio, you gotta believe they're going to stay in the top 4 and knock one of this year's participants out.

    England
    thru 18 of 38 games
    1) Arsenal -- 36 pts
    2) Man United -- 35 pts
    3) Chelsea -- 34 pts
    4) Everton -- 32 pts
    5) Liverpool -- 31 pts
    6) Newcastle -- 29 pts
    7) Tottenham -- 28 pts
    8) Southhampton -- 27 pts

Newcastle has a game in hand.

    Germany
    thru 18 of 38 games
    1) Bayern Munich -- 39 pts
    2) B. Dortmund -- 33 pts
    3) Werder Bremen -- 33 pts
    4) Shalke 04 -- 28 pts
    5) Stuttgart -- 27 pts
    6) 1860 Munich -- 25 pts
    7) Hamburg -- 25 pts
    8) Bochum -- 23 pts
    9) Hertha Berlin -- 23 pts
    14) Leverkusen -- 20 pts

Bayern is pulling away from everyone and the top 3 are pulling away from everyone else. The 2nd half may be strictly a race for UEFA cup spots. Leverkusen is all but out of the CL race.

    France
    thru 19 of 38 games
    1) Marseille -- 34 pts
    2) Nice -- 33 pts
    3) Monaco -- 32 pts
    4) Lyon -- 32 pts
    5) Auxerre -- 32 pts
    6) Guingamp -- 31 pts
    7) Sochaux -- 30 pts
    8) Lens -- 28 pts
    9) Nantes -- 28 pts
    10) PSG -- 27 pts

None of this year's participants are currently in spots to hold their place, but the top 7 places are separated by only 4 points, so it's not too late for Lyon and Auxerre. If Lens wants back in and if PSG wants to return to the top levels, they'll both have to get moving.

    Holland
    thru 16 of 34 games
    1) PSV Eindhoven -- 39 pts
    2) Ajax -- 37 pts
    3) Feyenoord -- 32 pts
    4) NAC Breda -- 25 pts
    5) Utrecht -- 24 pts
    6) Waalwijk -- 24 pts
    7) Kerkrade -- 23 pts
    8) Willem II -- 22 pts

The top 3 are pulling away from the rest leaving this as strictly as separate races for who gets the automatic group spot and for who gets the UEFA spots. Even the race for who gets the automatic spots isn't shaping up to be much of a race as the top 2 have some distance from Feyenoord.

This should be a multiple response question. I voted Leverkusen, but don't think Barcelona will make it either.

Clan or Elf, want to do this? Make if multiple response.

If so, I agree with IASocFan -- can you add 2 votes for Barcelona.

Barca and Leverkusen. The only way Barca makes it back is if they win the CL. That'll be hard.

As a Nantes fan I want them to win the league and get into the Champions League next season. However, if they can't get it done or finish top 3 I would like to see Marseille, Monaco and PSG get into the CL because they have the biggest budgets hence best chance for success. I have nothing against Nice but if they finish top 3 they will be stealing a good spot because they have no chance in Europe because they're not a wealthy club. Lyon had their chance this year and bombed so I don't wanna see them back in Europe. Auxerre will probably lose their best players next season so them getting a spot woud be a dissapointment.

Lyon was probably the best overall team in a group with Ajax, Inter and Rosenborg. They had some tough luck near the end.

Monaco is a ************ club who don't belong period.

I would like to see O.M., PSG and Lyon.

Someone posted on the other thread I started for the CL situation outside the top 6 that they are pretty sure that Greece now has the 2 automatic berths in the CL and that Holland now has only 1.

I was going off what each league got THIS year. But the UEFA coefficients have already been posted for next year (just not how they're going to split up the spots). If they split up the spots in exactly the same way, then...

Greece is the 6th rated league in the coefficients and will get 2 spots in the group phase. Their 3rd place team will be in the 3rd round of qualifying.

Holland is the 7th rated league in the coefficients and will only get 1 spot in the group phase and the 2nd place team will be in the 3rd round of qualifying.

That means that the race among the top 3 and top 2 takes on a LOT more meaning. The top spot is the only spot that's automatically in and the 3rd spot is definitely going UEFA Cup rather than having a shot at the CL.

Too bad. I think PSV and Ajax have more quality than any Greek side. Although PSV didn't really make an effort to show any :)

Well, PSV and Ajax could both still be in. It's just that one of them will have to win a qualifier. The one affected by this is Feyenoord (assuming the continue to be 3rd). They won't get in at all.
