What was put in place - WSJ Lite, bad articles, and kneecapping the local stuff surely didn't work either. Probably sped up the demise. The NYT on the other hand is on the upswing (though the Bedbug still chews and spits out his weekly dose of nonsense). So it can be done but getting rid of those that know how to run a newspaper and replacing them with Biznezzz Bros, and failed WSJ editors starts you off in a hole.
Whatever the trajectory was, it went straight downhill when Bezos had his paper give a tacit endorsement for a convicted felon, rapist, clown face makeup wearing twat, among many other typically disqualifying characteristics, to somehow return to the White House.
A bit of exaggeration and lack of history. The Grahams were running it straight downhill long before the family bailed out in the 2013 fire sale. Said Don in his 2013 sale letter to employees: "...the newspaper business continued to bring up questions to which we have no answers,... Our revenues had declined seven years in a row. ...our innovations...hadn’t made up for the revenue decline." He didnt mention that the paper had been losing tens of millions each year for previous decade before the sale. The company reported losing $49 million for the first half of 2013 on its newspaper operations, generating $138.4 million in revenue in the second quarter of the year. The losses in the first half of 2013 come after the company reported a $53.7 million loss in 2012, a $21.2 million loss in 2011, a $9.8 million loss in 2010 and a $163.5 million loss in 2009. In addition, in the past six years, overall operating revenue at The Washington Post’s newspaper holdings fell by 44%. The Washington Post: By The Numbers | Pew Research Center The lack of endorsement just added more speed to the runaway train.
Right, but Bezos' stated aim for buying the paper was to give it the financial freedom so that they could do the hard work of journalism without worrying about money. Anyway, if Bezos was actually worried about money, he could have sold the Post to some other entity. But what Bezos really wants is for the Post to die so that it will stop creating regulatory jeopardy by a federal government that exists by and for one criminal's personal enrichment.
It's official. https://www.mnufc.com/news/minnesota-united-signs-colombian-national-team-captain-james-rodriguez Hope you guys don't mind me posting this on Big Newspaper.
I'd speculate why his contract is guaranteed only through June 2026 but maybe one of you has better informed speculation.
He hasn't been able to complete an entire season injury free in at least 3 years. He gets to be in good condition before the World Cup and they can go their separate ways nice and tidy at that point, if things don't work well for both parties.
Josh Marshall has a different explanation. His view is that sure, Bezos could sell the paper to someone who will try to save it, but that would mean Bezos has failed. The Epstein Class of Musk, Bezos, Trump, those guys see any public failure as a kind of ego death. Bezos would rather eat more losses than initiate a sale, because the latter makes him a failure. If the Post dies, that’s just the business of journalism today. It doesn’t say anything negative about Bezos.
Is it bad that the first thing that came to mind upon seeing this email subject line was "The Simpsons"?
France and Colombia should be a decent match up - but they want $122 for 400 level nosebleeds? oof. At least the prices (finally) seem to be the all-in price - I hate how TikatDICKtator does it.
It is zero exaggeration at all to say that the largest subscriber cancellation event in WP history was a direct reaction to Bezos refusing to endorse Harris.
Agreed. Didnt suggest otherwise. Just pointing out the Wpsst was in a direct death trajectory long before then, not because of that.
The Post was in the same death trajectory that all papers were in. Bezos’ actions around the election accelerated it.
i think the cancellations this week may be bigger. At least for local or previous residents that liked the metro, sports, etc coverage.
