FIFA World Cup Power Ranking Derek Cornelius ranked #1 for defending https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/power-rankings
Unbelievable game for them to go down in history. I don't see the Swiss going for a draw after seeing this game.
I predict that we'll give them the ball and try to hit them on the counter. Losing Kone and Flores earlier...brutal for our midfield. Saliba is great and has grown a lot in Belgium but after that, you're down to Osorio and Choiniere... Predicting Davies comes in as a sub
Kone is a big loss but Saliba is a good player, too. Bombito playing the 2nd half is big news for us. We need his recovery speed out there. I’d start him over Cornelius. Davies should be back next game but I don’t find him as good for Canada as he is for his club team as he often tries to do too much for Canada and it doesn’t work.
Depends which version of the Swiss shows up on Wednesday. The one that struggled to put away Qatar, and eventually conceded the equalizer or the one that played against Bosnia in the second half today? If it's the former, at worst Canada gets a draw. If it's the latter, that will be a good game. I still give the edge to Canada playing at home. IF this game is tied after the last commer.......errrr... Hydration Break, it'd be a shock if the Swiss didn't park the bus, slash all of the tires and engage the E-Brake and play for the draw.
5+ - Canada is the first team from outside of Europe and South America to score five or more goals in a FIFA World Cup match.Horizons. pic.twitter.com/t6CE1xXumm— OptaJack⚽️ (@OptaJack) June 19, 2026
We’ve started the World Cup without our best player (Davies) and best defender (Bombito), now our best box to box midfielder is out (Kone) along with for lack of a better term, a huge midfield difference maker (Flores). Coming into the tournament we also had several players who were coming back from months long injuries who hadn’t played in forever. Our depth can’t match the elite countries but it is light years ahead of where it was a decade ago.
An average audience of 5.3 million viewers in a country of 41 million people. Amazing number. https://t.co/qxnf3mVZQx— Richard Deitsch (@richarddeitsch) June 19, 2026
Switzerland defeated Canada 2-1. Canada has to go to Inglewood near Los Angeles and could play South Korea with many Koreans around. Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina had 4 points and a head-to-head draw, and Canada's blowout win got them second on goal differential. Bosnia and Herzegovina is the first team to finish third and have to wait to see how other third place teams go. They could face us in the Round of 32.
To think I wrote this just a decade ago wondering what may become of our neighbors and it's been quite a blast seeing your success surging further up.
It should be night and day with Staq back at CM instead of Chioniere who was in over his head in CM today. Bombito should start, too. Canada was granted a real gift with South Africa falling into their lap. I hope the they can take advantage.
Heck.............even if they lose, Canada has gone further in this World Cup than they ever have before. The draw of South Africa has been kind, but South Africa aren't a minnow cupcake pushover either. They drew against both Panama and Jamaica in friendlies this year. Can't underestimate anybody in the knockout round of a World Cup. They're there for a reason. [True story: South Africa are ranked higher in the FIFA rankings than the USMNT's round of 32 opponent, Bosnia. I know FIFA rankings don't tell the whole story, but they do tell some story.]
There's no "easy" world cup - every team has 1 or 2 bad/poor/under performance in their betls. Some have way more margin for errors than others. Canada's had 2 bad halfs so far - another one might be one too many, let alone a bad game. If your team has played perfect to great games, congrats but worry about how your team will adjust/react when things go sideways. In that department, Marsch reacted well against Bosnia but too late against the Swiss. As for Canada vs South Africa - it will be the high press vs counterattack. Should be a great match and looking forward to it. My surprises Promise David is for real - what a presence and nightmare for defenders Luc De Fougerolles - Only 20 years old and already auditioning against Cornelius & Jones (when healthy) to pair with Bombito (when healthy) Nathan Saliba - Baptism by fire against the Swiss but grew into the game in the 2nd half and was able to match them - while Choiniere could not. Very high ceiling
Tani starts up front, Liam Millar starts for Ahmed and Bambino is in for LDF. Please Tani, don't miss 3 obvious goal scoring opportunities for once today.
