Canada 1 Suriname 0. Tani did not his seize his opportunity getting the start over Larin. He’s there to score and that’s it. I don’t care if he hits the post of misses the net. He’s got to take those chances. Ali Ahmed also reverting back to his MLS form this season by missing his great chance. Nice to see Junior hop in his Time Machine and save the day.

Shola Jimoh is only 16 years old and already a prodigy in CPL. If he repeats next year, he could break Kwasi Poku record selling fee
Promising player, definitely. There’s a lot of former promising young players who aren’t playing anymore and never reached the heights expected of them. Hopefully he has a good attitude, is surrounded by the right people and continues to work hard and improve.
2 Canadians on the shortlist for FIFA best defenders...Davies & Johnston Still wouldn't pick one of them if you had to build your starting XI? BREAKING: The @WhitecapsFC are for sale. The owners of the @MLS team have retained Goldman Sachs to sell the team. Majority owner Greg Kerfoot bought the team for about $30M in 2002. We now value the Whitecaps at $470M. pic.twitter.com/HG3oYtdi0N— Eben Novy-Williams (@novy_williams) December 13, 2024 Whitecaps owners putting team up for sale. Looking for an owner who will keep team in Vancouver.
I wish them good luck, the stadium situation being atrocious at BC Place with no hope of Vancouver ever letting them build a stadium in the city, this will be a tough sell. Relocation could happen The Whitecaps have zero assets. The training centre isn’t theirs and neither is the stadium. As much as I would love to see a more sophisticated group embrace Vancouver with a new direction, the reality points to relocation which would be cheaper than expansion.— Peter Schaad (@PeteSchaad) December 13, 2024
They've been trying since the mid 2000s to get a stadium on the waterfront but they never succeed. In this climate in the middle of a housing crisis, I can't see the city ceding prime land for the Whitecaps. This came out today coincidentally - (No stadium in the project) Vancouver's last undeveloped waterfront site could house convention centre, hotel, according to city memo https://vancouversun.com/opinion/co...centre-hotel-undeveloped-waterfront-vancouver Could the 'Caps be on their way out of Vancouver? 😮MLS insider @tombogert joins @AdamHuntSport and @ChrisWittyngham to discuss what's next for the three-time reigning Voyageurs Cup Champions following news that ownership that has initiated the process to sell the club 🇨🇦 pic.twitter.com/hGDQcMtrpw— Golazo America (@GolazoAmerica) December 13, 2024
The Vancouver Canucks said no - no surprise there especially with the rumour about MLS moving to a winter schedule. BTW, such a move would throw all 3 Canadians clubs under the bus. There's absolutely no way they can compete against the NHL Leafs, Canucks or Habs. The Aquilini family has told @GlobalBC that they are not interested in acquiring the Whitecaps. #VWFC— BCSoccerWeb.com (@bcsoccerweb) December 14, 2024
In a switch to a Fall/Winter calendar, most MLS teams would face the issue of having to compete more directly with local teams from more popular sports.
Would it though? MLS' season currently runs from late February until December if you make it to the MLS Cup Final. If you make the playoffs you're playing well into November. IF the league were to switch to an August-June schedule they would be taking half of December off through to at least the month of January, possibly through to the middle of February..... The reality is that MLS is always going to be competing against another pro sports league, usually multiple. Before anyone starts down with the "well if they got rid of Leagues Cup the Playoffs would end in late October-early November" BS, that wouldn't shift the schedule. It would merely get rid of the need to schedule midweek league games. Which there still would be 2-3 of those every season due to FIFA windows.
I do agree that the current Spring Summer schedule is nicely adapted to the current sporting landscape in North America.
Hockey and NBA tickets in Toronto are pricey and if you're asking people to choose where to spend, NHL will always be prioritized and with the colder weather, you're looking at falling attendances. Summer was perfect for those clubs since there was only the CFL which also attracts a different demographic Lastly, expect CPL to capitalize on MLS not playing in the summer. They'd be quick to put more clubs in those metro areas. They could play the League Cup in the summer but it isnt really popular here either
Ummm..... MLS takes late July to mid August off now for Leagues Cup...... why hasn't CPL rushed to fill that void? Where are these new CPL teams going to play? MLS currently starts play in late February and plays through until December...... during the bulk of the NHL and NBA seasons as is.... Also, with the World Cup, Gold Cup and Club World Cups, MLS isn't playing in June now anyways. So what are we really talking about here? The month of July? Which will now be filled with pre-season friendlies against European and Mexican Clubs? I fully understand that there are pros and cons to the current schedule and the proposed switch to a Summer (Fall)-Spring schedule. The perception that MLS would now have to compete with insert league here, isn't valid. MLS already directly competes against the other US-Canadian Leagues. Switching the schedule doesn't change that fact. The bigger issue for the three Canadian MLS teams has been their on field product. When those teams are playing well and winning, people turn up regardless of the weather. When they don't field a compelling and winning team..... attendance suffers.[/QUOTE]
Burnaby (Vancouver), Montreal Island and Toronto can support CPL clubs, all in due time . The CPL cup finals had very high ratings on CBC - over 609 000 tuned in and that's not counting streaming. How many tuned in for the latest MLS Cup? How would a full overlap with the NHL not affect those clubs? It would, everyone knows that here The best time for those clubs to play and do good business is when the NHL isn't around, that's all and that's the reality here. I don’t think you understand how big the NHL is here, it's not just attendance or TV viewership that would be affected - mainstream media would pretty much barely talk or cover the league. The NHL has front page in the sport section on paper and TV whenever something happens in the heart of summer... let alone during NHL season. With all their expenses being in USD and revenues in CAD and without the benefit of "green cards" - it's tougher to pull off compare to US clubs. Vancouver and Montreal already said they wouldn’t spend like top clubs. It's increasingly obvious that they don’t fit and just throwing more cash when the stadium situation isn't good plus the threat of changing schedule brings a lot of uncertainty. TFC is the only club that can through MLSE but Bell is out and it really depends how long or how willing Rogers is to spend ob TFC. When MLSE had different owners even the Maples Leafs were terrible. The message is to not take for granted that TFC will always be allowed to be top spenders in MLS. People will be looking at Montreal next if Vancouver does move. Saputo even moved to Italy, he's all in with Bologna and Serie A and the Montreal club might be more drama (fans, media & financials) than he's willing to put up with at some point. Cashing out at around $550M when he just put in $40M to get in might look very attractive to him
Best thing that could happen. IMO, it's a win-win for both countries. Keep MLS with US clubs and add Montreal and Toronto to CPL. And as you claim about Saputo, I wouldn't be surprised either if in the near future he puts Montreal up for sale.
