I think this sort of stuff in terms of going to the Chiefs game or not is not particularly relevant to the performance. It’s not like the players wojldnahge switched training or preparing for the match to go. Every camp is going to have free time to fill and going to a an NFL game is orettt harmless in terms of filling that time. Canada won because they were more motivated, played way harder, and have a coach with a very specific way he wants to play which the team is doing a good job of executing. It had zero to do with who went to the Chiefs game and who didn’t.
They should just aim for trying to be kings of CONCACAF and being consistently a top 20 team in the world. No need to get fancy.
Not excellent resources when it comes to soccer, terrible resources. We crowd fund our head coach and our program. Our organization is also terrible, just google the CSA. There is no clear professional pathway for many of our youngsters. The Province of Quebec has 8.5 million people and 1 professional soccer team. Moise Bombito went to a junior college in the U.S and miraculously made it to pro soccer. If his English wasnt good enough to go that route (like many in Quebec), he wouldnt be a pro soccer player today. Niko Siguar got a trial lined up by some family members while on vacation in Croatia while he was enrolled in University. That's the only reason he plays pro soccer and is on the CMNT. Just about all of our players have made it despite the system. You have to be extremely lucky to make it as a pro soccer player in Canada. Every pro player will tell you about guys they played with in their teens who were better than they were but quit at 18 and never had any opportunities to continue in the game. it doesn't matter how good you are if no one ever scouts you or gives you a chance at a higher level. Contrast that with our extensive hockey pyramid in this country and if you are good enough hockey player, you will absolutely not be overlooked and and given every opportunity to make it to the NHL. At a minimum, we need several more CPL teams (taking us up to 12 teams) to give players more professional opportunities in this country.
Haha, I lived in Vancouver when this happened. I remember it well. What I meant is, the platform is there for Canada, even if it's still in its infancy. The next generation of players will certainly have an easier time than this one, aided in large part by those kind of miraculous breakthroughs. And once they convince the country (a task like 1/13 the size compared to the US) suddenly more resources will start making its way to soccer. Ice hockey is and was and will always be king, and baseball and football were surprisingly popular there as well, but soccer has a very clear path to going from niche status to mainstream, and quickly
Wouldn't surprise me if they were actually there for Jonathan David. I'm glad our players played with intensity and hopefully impressed the scouts. Need to make the most of every chance we get when we have eyes on us to give our players opportunities for moves that they've rarely had in the past. Tie game with Mexico - I'd say this has been a pretty good window which is reflected in the ELO ranking below Canada is #2 behind Mexico in CONCACAF
Winning a continental cup gets you lots of FIFA points due to the multipliers. Also, Mexico lose matches to teams of comparable ranking while the US lost to teams ranked much lower like Trinidad in Nations League and Panama in Copa America. Those losses in continental cups means that those multipliers goes both ways and they lost lots of points. Tying New Zealand will hurt as well since they are ranked #69 Also, makes sense for Canada to rise rapidly as they are much better than their ranking so we've been getting lost of points and keep doing so
Sure, I agree winning GC gets you points but so does winning NL which US has done. Yea, current results will hurt USMNT more.
Two issues for the US - the Nations League has way fewer matches (2 versus 6 for the Gold Cup), and the Elo rankings give the Gold Cup matches a 66% higher coefficient for match importance. So, in this year's Nations League, the US earned 38 points for their two wins. Mexico earned 49 in last summer's Gold Cup, and would have earned a lot more had they not dropped 43 points by losing to Qatar.
Less than 3 years ago, Moise Bombito was playing in Ligue 1 Québec for CS St-Laurent and he's now in the best XI of France Ligue 1. There are more Bombito in this country to uncover. 🇫🇷 Ligue 1 Team of the Week pic.twitter.com/nVgneNkDva— WhoScored.com (@WhoScored) September 23, 2024
Canada’s men’s national team will head to Montréal for training camp to start the October international window. While Canada Soccer are looking to “develop opportunities” for games, no games on the schedule yet. There will be an open training session for fans. #CanMNT— Joshua Kloke (@joshuakloke) September 24, 2024
Someone should tell Panama? Maybe Ticketmaster, too, since they're selling tickets for October 15. https://canadasoccer.com/news/canmnt-to-play-october-friendly-against-panama-in-toronto/
I think they wanted to play a second game in Montreal but not a lot of teams available. Mexico as far as I can tell also only has one game scheduled so I’m not sure why they don’t play them.
Mexico is playing Valencia and I think Canada was looking at playing a club side themselves (in addition to the match v Panama in Toronto). The fact that the camp is based in Montreal and they have a public event on the 9th at Stade Saputo makes me think they were going in hoping to play a second match there on that day. As much as it's nice that they're reaching out to the grassroots and spending time in Montreal, it all does feel a bit like a contingency plan.
I like the idea in theory (though I’s not sure the match would be competitive enough to be too valuable), but there’s two CPL matches on Oct. 5, two more on the 6th, then a match on the 10th and 12th… there’s no time to get a game in on the 9th or 10th and the regular season ends on the 19th, so teams are vying for positioning and the final playoff place. I think the CPL fixtures list is already far too congested.
