I've heard MLS fans regularly say things like "it isnt MLS responsibility to help the USMNT." Apparently, not only are they trying to elevate the CanMNT, but it is a primary goal. Kinda weird. Elevating Canada’s National Team was a primary goal when MLS started our expansion to Canada. 14 MLS players will be on the field tonight representing Canada — along with many others that were developed in our system — as they take on Lionel Messi and Argentina. Interesting point??? You CHOSE to label Canadian players as internationals on US MLS clubs yet Americans are domestics on Canadian clubs. Canadian players are achieving in MLS in spite of you not because of you— Tim Drodge 🇨🇦🇺🇦 (@bgnewf) July 9, 2024
Good run for Canada, they’ve momentarily regained the unofficial kings of Concacaf label last held during the Ocho.
Better team definitely won but first goal should have never occurred as a Foul through the back 20 Seconds earlier should have been whistled.
Hat off to Canada. You guys had a fantastic tournament. Made the USA look amateurish in comparison. Love the sense of fight you alluded to.
It’s true the 2016 US Copa America team was not very good. And failed to qualify for the World Cup shortly thereafter.
And it should stay that way. Don't you always complain if USMNT has MLS players on it? USMNT 2016 wasn't very good. We didn't have a single shot, at all, against Argentina in that semi and got run over 4-0. Canada gave Argentina a good game and missed some opportunities. I wouldn't doubt if Shaffelburg and Bombito leave soon to Europe. Oluwaseyi could be another one too.
No, Garber didn’t “choose” that. It’s the law. It’s illegal for the league to treat Canadians as domestics unless it’s the same for Albanians and Zimbabweans and everyone in between. We hashed that out on these boards when TFC came into the league.
Canada now has positive momentum heading into preparations for WC26. Concerns? Still have only scored 2 goals in 7 games under Marsch. 1 goal in 11 v 11 soccer They benefitted from red cards that both Chile and Peru got in the group stages. Beat Venezuela on penalties. But that's the way soccer goes. You take advantage of what the game gives you. Survive and advance is the name of the game in these tournaments. Canada did that and lost to the better team in the semi. No shame in that. [Argentina being better than everyone.] I still think Jesse Marsch is a charlatan, though. This "success" in the Copa doesn't change my opinion on that. He'll get found out. [That also doesn't mean I think Berhalter is better than him.]
Domestic doesn’t mean citizen/eligible to represent the country. All you need to be considered a US domestic in MLS is a green card. No Canadian is losing opportunities to play for US MLS teams and if the rules were to change tomorrow it would have little to no impact on Canadian players.
That too…green cards are very easy to get. What’s the going rate for an international slot? It’s less than $100K I’m pretty sure.
Especially as they're only going to be playing CONCACAF teams and minor nations while the rest of the world is trying to qualify.
No, it’s not. MLS’ American teams can’t give preferential treatment to Canadian players over other nationalities. That would violate Federal anti-discrimination laws.
Some people like him won't get it. I understand where he is coming from cause I have had those same inquiries including counting green card holders as "domestic players". I have had my issues with that but there has to come a point you understand that this isn't something MLS does on purpose. It's US law.
Yeah, it comes up repeatedly on these threads. I suspect MLS would be fine with treating Canadian players as domestic players for roster purposes. But their lawyers told them no.

Forge beats Toronto FC 2-1 Forge wishing a "happy 4th of July" to Toronto FC on social media was gold!
Given MLS' single entity structure, wonder if they could open up a separate legal entity based in Canada and employ Canadian players through there?
