#1 team beats #8 and remains undefeated, and no thread? Where is all the pbp, game recaps, and commentarys? What's with two red cards and all the yellows...was Terry Vaughn the center for this game? Where are the naysayers predicting the accordian like collapse the 2nd half of the season? Does 3 straight OT wins mean parity, playing down to the competition, or does VA actually have some leadership and heart this year? Why are there threads on Loyola, UWM vs Marquette and Iowa and no.........well, you know what I mean.
btw, before I leave to take the kid to school...love Jonathan V coming off the bench at hlf...he raises the attack to a whole 'nother level!
THis game certainly deserves its own thread, sounds like it was a good one and if WVU is gonna be good, this is a rivalry worth cultivating. From the game reports, WVU gets a man tossed in the first half and UVa finally breaks through in the 59th when Villanueva gets his first college assist by setting up Colaluca. Thirty seconds later the Cavs go a man down when Sean Hinkle gets his second yellow. That opens the door for the Mountaineers and in the 79th their big Aussie, Jarrod Smith, ties it up. They go to OT and Reyering uses his 6-6 frame to head a ball to Colaluca who knocks in the game-winner. UVa is 8-0-0 and ranked 1-2 in all the polls but I have a hard time believing they are currently one of the two best teams in the country. On the one hand, they haven't lost and have only allowed 5 goals and have won three in a row in OT, which is a good sign. But, they've gone to OT in three straight games, which isn't a good sign, and they have yet to play a game away from C-Ville. On the one hand, they've got good wins over UCLA, UCSB and now West Virginia, plus are 2-0-0 in the ACC but on the other hand, they struggled to beat St. Franics and went to OT with bottom-dwelling BC and, they've only scored 13 goals all season despite having a very impressive collection of attacking talent. Having said all that, I know I sound whiney complaining about an 8-0-0 team. Still, at the end of the day it doesn't really matter what this team does in the regular season. George has had plenty of great regular season teams. Heck, it doesn't even matter what he does in the ACC Tourney because he's done pretty well in that, too. Ultimately, only a trip to the College Cup will mean this season is a success. That's a pretty unfair standard to set, but after one trip in 10 seasons, that's the predicament you find yourself in, especially when you're one of the top two ranked tams in the country.
Hey now, everybody loves a good David (marquette) vs Goliath (UWM) matchup... especially when the head coach of Goliath for the last ten seasons bolts to cross-town David for a pay raise!
I was at the game. Was a well-fought match. UVA getting their usual home field advantage from the referee in the first half. More parity in the second, especially after the red card on Hinckle. The red card should actually have been on #4 Soumare as he was all over Smith on the play. Hinckle was just unlucky. Great goals by both teams. UVA was definately on the ropes towards the end of regulation with WVU knocking on the door at least three times before the end. Possibility that the OT goal was offside; however, you aren't going to get that call in UVA's house. Anyway, I'd love to see the re-match, particularly at a neutral site.
Some troubling facts about UVA's season: Beat powerhouse Davidson 1-0 on a PK Beat UCSB 1-0 after playing entire second half a man up ... UCSB has 12 corners in 2nd half to UVA's 2 or 3 Beat a weak George Mason team 2-0 for their only 2 goal win this season Beat UCLA 1-0 on a goal in the 88th minute; UCLA was playing their second match in 48 hours after losing 4-1 to Maryland a couple of nights earlier Beat powerhouse St. Francis in OT after equalizing with only 26 seconds to play in regulation Beat Boston College, the only unranked ACC team, in OT Beat WVA in OT despite playing a man up for 1/3 of the match No goals or assists by superfrosh Villaneuva in first seven matches ... finally notches an assist for his first career point in his 8th match Eight wins, seven of them by one goal Seven of eight matches played in C'ville; only road win against a marginal NC State A solid 5 goals allowed but only 14 scored ... compare that to Clemon who have also allowed only 5 goals while scoring 27 in the same number of matches (and while beataing 1st, 5th and 10th ranked teams) 3 OT wins and another game winner in the 88th minute ... more luck than heart/toughness? A contrarian's view: troubling signs abound in Hooville, but their entitled players and fans probably fail to recognize them.
Your damn right. We have the best team, with the best players, and the best coach . We have the best polo team, the best lacrosse team, as well as the richest parents and best looking girls. All is well!!!!!!!!
