BVB initials are from the founding name of the club:

"Ballspiel-Verein Borussia 1909" (Ball games club Borussia 1909).

Borussia is a variant on 'Prussia' and the Dortmund club is actually named after a brewery in northeastern Dortmund named 'Borussia'.

Does any of the locals know the score or details of the Borussia Monchengladbach's reserve's game with the US U-20's on April 18?

Cris, that was "Tennis Borussia Berlin" or "TeBe Berlin" as their nickname was. They bankrupted themselves trying to make a run for the 1. Bundesliga one season. They brought in Winfried Schaefer to coach, bought Sasa Ciric from 1. FC Nuernberg, brought back Uwe Roesler and a few other older "name" players, but the strategy backfired. I believe they were close in the first year, but the club couldn't keep up with the expense involved in their quest and eventually were relegated all the way back to the amateur leagues where I believe they still remain.......

BVB is probably the most underrated team in europe. they are one of those really good teams that are not given much noteriety because of other big teams in their league, like villareal in spain.

Not really. We've been going through some hard times since 2002. All of it our own fault.

Everything from stupid management with idiotic personnel policies, stupid business decisions and faith in a bad trainer to players who just tuned out the bad trainer and were allowed to lose confidence in themselves and each other.

And that doesn't go into the fallout of the near bankruptcy that occurred because of all I just mentioned.

We aren't nearly "all the way back" yet, but we finally seem to be headed in the right direction........

Borussia Dortmund (full name Ballspiel-Verein Borussia 1909 e.V. Dortmund, often short BVB) is a German football team based in Dortmund. They play in the Bundesliga, and has successed internationally. The football department is the most famous of the club, but it also has a handball and table tennis department.

The club was founded on December 19, 1909 in a room of the pub Zum Wildschütz in Dortmund. The name Borussia (latin of Prussia) was adopted from the nearby Borussia brewery. Borussia Dortmund was the first German football team to go to the stock market in 2000. In 2005, the club is on the brink of insolvency.

The club has the largest stadium in the Bundesliga which is the 82,678 capacity Westfalenstadion, named after the Nordrhein-Westfalen region where the club was established. Current famous players include Jan Koller, Tomas Rosicky, Ewerthon and Christoph Metzelder.

The arch rival of Borussia is FC Schalke 04 of nearby Gelsenkirchen.

But its definately not DAB :
Dortmunder Aktien Brauerei is a German brewery in the city of Dortmund, founded in 1868.

They produce a lager called Dab after their initials. It is exported worldwide.

    from WIkipedia
    From the BVB Homepage :
    Borussia's turbulent founding
    December 12, 1909

Yesterday evening there were tumultuous scenes in the Northeastern part of Dortmund on account of the founding of "Ballspiel-Verein Borussia 1909" (the club for ball games Borussia). Over 40 members of the catholic youth group "Trinity parish" (located in Flurstraße) met at the restaurant "Wildschütz", Oesterholzstraße 60, at 7 p.m. to form the "Ballspiel-Verein Borussia 1909" because of love for football and anger for chaplain Hubert Dewald, who is responsible for youth care at the Trinity parish. Spokesman and vice president of the new club, Franz Jacobi, said: "Since 1902 I have been a member of the Trinity youth and we have played football at the Weiße Wiese (i.e white meadow, playing field) since 1906. Since that time we as footballers have systematically been fought and defamed.
We can no longer accept that. It is necessary to form a club." Father Dewald sought to personally prevent the club's founding - in vain. He and his faithful followers were physically blocked when trying to enter the restaurant. Father Dewald's attempt to get in led 20 so-called rebels to not attend the founding ceremony of Borussia Dortmund, leaving 18 true "Borussen" (members or players of Borussia Dortmund) behind for the establishing of the club. By the way, the name "Borussia" is derived from the brewery located in Steigerstraße of the same name. In the early days, when the players walked to the Weiße Wiese, they always passed the Borussia brewery. The club's uniform consisted of blue and white striped jerseys with a red sash and black shorts. The new club will now strive for admission to Westdeutscher Spielverband (West German Sports Federation).

And I have "googled" the Information :
    1901, 8. November
Gründung der Dortmunder Hansa Brauerei AG als Nachfolgerin der Borussia Brauerei. (11/8/1901) Founding of the Hansa Brewery AG as successor of the Borussia Brewery Dortmund , so it seems the Borussia Brewery actually wasn't around anymore when BVB was founded
