Being a Metros fan, it was a great game away from home. I don't care about defense, just results. A draw on the road vs. SJ is not bad. Too bad it wasn't prime time on ESPN2 or something, because THESE are the type of games that win over new fans. It's just good for MLS.
As an Earthquakes fan, I didn't like the fact that Pat Onstad was asleep for many of the MetroStars goals and that the team didn't win. But I could imagine that for the casual fan, it was much better than the previous week's slower-paced 1-1 game vs. DC (with much more passion in the stands than the SJ-DC game too, despite the smaller number). As a matter of fact, it would've been nice if the nationally-telecast SJ-DC game was like yesterday's 5-5 SJ-Metros goalfest, as it probably would've turned more of the first-timers (who nominally only came to see Freddy Adu) onto the sport in general. Of course in the 1pm PT heat, it probably would've been harder for the players to exert that type of energy. Oh well. -G
The defense was slack alright, but sometimes you don't see strikes the quality we saw in the first half in a month of matches. Arguably the top two keepers in MLS were reduced to helpless spectators. Ironic that Pope & Walker teamed to shut out Mexico, then allow 8 goals in their next two league matches.
This is the good thing about Soccer or Futbol. You never know who is going to beat ur butt in any giving time. What happen last night was something that happens once in a while. I can tell you that it must be difficult for goalkeepers and defenders to play in Spartan Stadium. Its too small, anything can happen. Its about ball control. That is the key to win. If you get the ball, you might score. The pace of the game was amazing.
I absolutely loved that game. You are right when saying that it would be awesome if it would be on ESPN Primetime. I can tell you that this is MUCH better than a 0-0 tie.
I agree. Its all up to what which one of us like or dislike. Many people love goalfeast, other dont. I'm the type of fan that love goalfeast, but also get excited with a 0-0 score. Last night was something positive because people dont get to see this things everyday. So if it happens once in a while, its fine and acceptable. Let's continue enjoying the game.
I think the question comes down to if you enjoy watching good goalkeeping or not. MLS could hire 10 lousy keepers and we would see huge scores every week. Do you think the casual fan knows the difference between a goal scored on a good shot or a goal scored on a bad shot?
It is funny that you brought this topic up. For this weekend I actually this the Colorado-New England was better the the San Jose-New York game. Maybe i am a sucker for good goal keeping.
It's always fun to see a ton of goals scored. Doesn't say much for the defense of either team and the keepers now have a terrible GAA. Still made for quite an exciting game. I personally thought the galaxy game was just as exciting at 3-1 and the DC United game was great because they played really nice passes worked the ball really well. They may not have finished them, but it's great to see good skilled football.
What I was particularly impressed with was the long-range shooting. Off memory, I think that at least 4 of the 8 goals scored in the run of play were outside the box, and two others were close. I can't remember when we've seen that many such goals in a week, much less a single game. Combine that with some of the shots from the LA-Dallas game (I should have known something was weird when Matt Behncke hammered a shot on goal), and I'm wondering if people won't be able to complain about lack of long shots in MLS.
Incredible game. Basically every goal deserved to be on a highlight reel somewhere. Some great stuff. The things is, the Col v. NE 0-0 game was a very exciting game as well. Sure, not as exciting as 5-5, but nonetheless, with all those close chances, very well played and with many, many nervous moments as well.
3 of the goals scored would be enough to make any casual fan take notice of MLS. Ching's goal off of the Donovan assist, then Donovan's goal and Glenn's second goal from Gaven. The other two where pentalies and a product of some bad marking. Yes they were nice finishes but you can't give any professional that much time near the goal. I can see liking the 0-0 games but there better a special relevance like a playoff match or something because regular league games can get a little boring.
I voted for Joselito Vaca's BOMB on the goal of the week. It was a lazer beam and just the type of goal I like to see happen and I wish would happen more often. I was just thinking before this week when we would start to see people take chances outside the box for Christ's sake and BOOM this game happens. Crazy game, crazy goals, defenders and keepers gone crazy... I like it.
What a game. Players should take those kinds of shorts more often - but in a low scoring game, they pass on the shot and move the ball to someone else. In this game, a couple players took their chance, hit them and then other players got to the same position and said "what the heck, I'll try it" and they hit it. Normally they don't even try and take those shots. The thing just snowballed. What a game. It is a shame that more folks don't go to the games in SJ.
I think the game was incredible. Not only because of the great goals, but because it was played with so much passion and energy for the full 90. But I think Dominic Kinnear watched the game as a fan not as the head coach. As much as I liked the excitement of the back-and-forth action, he should have put the Earthquakes in a defensive mode, slow the pace of the game, and be content with counter-attacks after they were up 5-3. The coach robbed his own team of 2 points.
You obviously didn't see Friday's Colorado-New England game and some of the sensational saves Adin Brown and Joe Cannon made.
