Marshall will not. However, it is possible that both Cochrane and Wingert will be. I'm making the assumption that the league will, at the bare minimum, allow us to draft Nunez with #6 as compensation for the Adu related injustices. So which of these players would be a better fit? I know very little about this year's draft prospects, but I saw from the bio on the Nunez thread that Wingert is a four-year player from St. John's. I don't know how old Cochrane is. Frankly I think we should be looking more at 4-year players like Ralph and Noonan than underclassmen. Anyone have impressions of these two players?
Wingert's size really worries me. I know as a Cowboy fan I shouldn't value measurements over performance, but a 22 year old probably won't grow and 5'10" 160 doesn't make for the stout central defender I like on my hypothetical side.
Wingert isn't a central defender. Think more along the lines of a Tudd Dunivant. Is Cochrane that much better than Shavar Thomas?
No, not in my book. Cochrane is smaller than Shavar by a bunch and not nearly the athletic talent. Cochrane is a cerebral center back, not physcial. I would take Wingert. Left side player, can play Left mid too.
I guess this is really my last chance to say this before the draft, but I hope we pick Cochrane. I haven't seen any of the defenders play, but in reading the revsnet scouting report, they talk a lot about Wingert's offensive abilities. I don't want an attacking defender. Especially since attacking too much always seems to be a problem for our defenders (Suarez, Gbandi). I want a guy who knows his place is in the back line. If Cochrane is a cerebral center back, that's exactly what I want. I think those defenders are less common than the athletic/man-marking types, at least in this league. And it always seems that job has to fall to a older guy. But if Cochrane sticks with the Burn and plays the Jeff Agoos (SJ-era) role for us, we could be set for anywhere between 8-13 seasons, depending on how early he's ready to take that leadership role. Also, if he's a good organizer of the defense, as they say in the revsnet scouting report, that's going to help out Countess (as it seems to be a weakness for him, at least judging by last season's mess). alansl
Get over the "injustice". You get a major allocation. The injustice would be robbing San Jose of the #5 pick with no compensation by forcing them not to pick Nunez.
Re: Re: What defender will be around at #4? Why should SJ miss out on getting screwed? And if you think a major allocation which can't be used because of no SI spots is good compensation, the league office just might have a job for you. I wouldn't worry about your own interests though. I'm quite confident that Dallas will get F'ed to the max, however that turns out to be.
