Being born in Canada, I could play (in theory) for the canadian squad, but my mom was brazilian and italian when I was born making me eligible to play for both those countries.. Obviously I would choose Brazil... What would your choice be if people were bursting down your door for you to play for them??? Canada being one of the choices.... I'd say most people on this board is a citizen or landed immigrant... And usually the other country has a chance of making the WC....
It's a good thing your mother had so much Brazilian pride when she was deciding what country to raise her children in...
Hmmm, which country would I want to represent? Which country's insignia would I want over my heart? Which country's national anthem would I want played as I stood on the pitch? Got to be the one that gave me everything - CANADA I could wax poetically about why this shouldn't even be a debate, but alas, I fear our greatness as a nation is all but forgotten in pursuit of some personal glory for many with eyes of representing another nation on the world stage. I will never understand that position.
I would play for Canada, though I could qualify to play for Germany as well. Even though it's allowed, I couldn't justify playing for a country I've never lived in.
Eligible for : Netherlands, Scotland, Canada. I would only play for Canada. Not just because it is the greatest country of all time and I love the hell out of it, but because my fellow Canadians paid for my school, healthcare, and my student loans. Did I mention it's the greatest country of all time?
dude I was born here and moved to brazil for 6 months... I still wouldn't play for Canada... just because I would want to win... not for country pride... thats such an archaic way of viewing things... also a little touchy... put ur panties back on lady! having said that, its a great place to live... not to play footy in... or for for that matter
uh.. go ask, deco, liedson, pepe, camaronesi, gonzalez, and several others... the point of international football is negotiations... theres a clause in the premiership and several other countries that states that people can only be hired if they play X amount of games for their country sort of like what happened to afonso 2 years ago.... who is he, where is he now?? lol... really people, you guys think its about national pride??? not about shirt selling and money??? or maybe I'm just too cynical... I dunno Sepp what do you think?? EDIT: how r you proud of something in most cases you have absolutely no control??? LOL... its not like you were like, ok, finally my mom is in canada... I'm gonna come out now... I never understood... thats why I support SPFC before brazil... I'm also cheering for Uruguay because of Forlan (who's dad played for us) and Lugano...
International football doesn't exist for that reason, the World Cup did not come into existence for legal purposes. It exists so that countries can put their best up against the best from other countries. At its root, and for the fans, of course it's all about national pride, and though rigid nationalism often has a nasty face, in the case it's a healthy thing so long as people don't take it too far.
yea but what about di stefano that played for italy argentina and spain... there are several from way back when... and I am FAR from a patriot or nationalist at any stage... for ANY country I have no brazil tattoos, yet I have an arm dedicated for SPFC... club first country far second IMO... EDIT; for EX, I would probably not support a team canada with no TFC player... maybe even cheer against them... especially if they r composed of montreal l'impdicks and whitecrap players...
Removed posts. I'd ask that we keep any sweeping generalizations about countries out of the thread please.
I'd play for Canada, no second thoughts about. I could qualify for Italy or Slovenia just for the sake of this thread I'd say Slovenia over Italy, but they only play 2nd and 3rd fiddle to Canada. To me I guess it comes down to who has done more for you and who do you feel you owe the most. I've known nothing but Canada so that's why it comes first. I've always felt that you should represent the association whose system taught you to be the player you are, but I guess if you end up playing in Europe or S. America and you feel their societies have treated you right then I suppose I can understand the reasoning. I don't understand the personal glory rationale. If you're looking for that join tennis or swimming or something. Soccer is a team sport. You don't win, you're there to help the TEAM win.
this thread is about the guy who started it. he just wants to talk about himself and what he thinks of International Footy. although he did "ask" the question you can tell he couldn't be bothered. these kinda threads crack me up.
