I have a soft spot for the Sting teams. We'd meet them after weeknight games at Arnie's (I think that's the name) on State, right where it intersects with Rush. It's something else now. Plus, I was the dj for their official after parties at the Executive House on Wacker and Wabash?
It would be interesting to see the 1981 sting vrs the 1998 fire at their best but of course this will happen only in heaven. 1981 sting was better than the 1984 sting. Actually I wonder if a fully healthy 2000 fire wasn't the best.
Nice, was Stefanhaugen's (spelled wrong I am sure) place? I miss the Sting, I know where to get their old outdoor uni's but cannot find their MISL indoor ones.
That 81 team was awesome, would love to see that game played. Too bad none of the FIFA games or other soccer games have the old NASL teams in them.
You guys seem to remember the Sting very well, anywhere on the web I can find stats for them? Do you remember most players? In March 2003 my wife and I made a trip to England and France. To cut a long story short, in a small village in the English countryside, we ran into Jim Steel (sp?), who played for the Sting in the late 70's early 80's, so I was told.
No, it was Arnie's, not Arno's. Although Arno did have a bar/restaurant/club somewhere in Chicago which I never went to unfortunately, this was a different place. Fairly upscale, maybe a small dancefloor. Lots of dark wood. Served food as I remember. We would be calling it a lounge now. I seem to remember it being about 1000N, west side of the street, in an apartment building. I think.
That name sounds familiar. Try http://www.geocities.com/prosportshistory/naslhistory.html I also found this: http://home.att.net/~nasl/nasl.htm There is no Jim Steel listed with the Sting, but that doesn't mean he didn't play. Also, there's a Tim and Mike Twellman listed. Is one of them Taylor Twellman's dad?
One of them was, I think Tim. For my money, as great as some of the teams from the NASL were and as talented as some of the players were (granted, tapes are all I have to go by, and vague memories), the 2000 Chicago Fire are the most talented team that has ever played in this city.
Yup. Tim is Taylor's dad. Played for the Minnesota Kicks and the Tulsa Roughnecks as well as the Sting.
Arno's was on Lincoln Avenue. Nice joint. There was also a bar in Rosemont at one of the hotels that the players would go to after indoor games at the Horizon. It was nice to be able to sit and talk with your favorite player over a beer.
I'm only 19... the '84 or '81 Sting I know NOTHING about, except Dave Huson and Brett Hall have been coaches of mine during my club days. I've only been to 1 Power game... I don't think they were any good, but I do remember when Maradona's illegitamte brother joined the team, hahaha. ANYWAYS.... the 2003 Chicago Fire was a force to be reckoned with. They really were one of the best soccer teams I have ever seen play throughout an entire season... and regardless of the outcome of the MLS Cup, they still played extremely well, and had me cheering everyday. The '98 Fire, the ONLY expansion team to win the league championship in any sport in the US, was a team that played as a unit though, and they, at times, tore through opponents.
The 2000 Fire were a great team, but the 81 Sting did beat the vaunted Cosmos in the soccerbowl. The 81 Sting had playmakers and a great finisher in Granizta. What would it take to get EA to do an MLS game with the old NASL teams in it as well, kinda like with the Madden games.
