So is that about Ryan Adams ("blue roses at your feet") or Blaze Foley ("your duck taped shoes") or somebody else entirely?
while I originally thought that your first guess was correct...it was the second guess: Behind the Song: “Drunken Angel,” Lucinda Williams (americansongwriter.com)
Ah! I should have known it was Lucinda's; it is her all over. And then I would have known it was Blaze-- she lived next door to him for a while. When Blaze got hisself killed, a bunch of his friends got together the available recordings and did a diaspora, traveling in all different directions to spread the word. Tony de Roadie (now gone himself) came to visit my landlord in Taos, and they spent an evening proselytizing me with the stories of his life and the music on his "Live from the Outhouse' tape, and Tony left me the cassette. I used to sneak "If I Could Only Fly" from it on the air now and then, so he did get a half dozen plays on an obscure but prestigious station in the high desert...
'The Ballad Of Jerry Phillips' with, as Stuart calls it, "...a hooptie homemade video by yours truly."
