You're in Geneva... those are all French people you're meeting. The Teuts speak English, which is a good thing, since no one else can understand their German. I lived in Carouge for a while, I know what you mean.

    looks great:)

just if you come to Cologne or Münich, don´t say "Ich bin ein Berliner":)

    The WEISSBIER is great world

but for Cologne use more "Kölsch"..

but I´m really impressed by your German.

    you are like born Geman:)

Just put into your vocabulary: Danke, Bitte, few politely phrase..and you are perfect

Are you referring to what the Brits do? Was it meant for French archers, or was it some other country? Yeah, that would have been bad.:D

Just a word for the the GrammatikPolizei...

it's pointless to nitpick on little things when what you're looking for is just a barebones ability to communicate. like was said before, being gracious and making the effort to use the native tongue is the most important thing.

Thanks for that Bill. I just had a very nice flashback to my late German born Dad calling the car a Folksvagon when I was a kid, and me asking him what the heck he was talking about! :)

I hope to see the town he was born in when I'm there........

Since Germany did not conquer the world, there are not many places where it is the native language or where "Deutschland ueber Alles" is routinely sung!

Hi, I saw your post on the Yanks in Germany Yahoo board. Thanks for all of your help!

I plan on learning as much as possible in the short time before June, just to try to make it easier to get around, order foood etc.

I also speak some Italian, and it should be fun to try to talk to the Italian fans

It's my understanding that Italian and Spanish are very similar, so if you just yell sh/t at them in Spanish they'll understand most of it. My grandmother lived in Italy for several years and was able to get around perfectly using mostly Spanish (along with a little broken Italian and broken English).

I love learning foreign languages and discover new cultures. If I had not spoken english, I would have not been able to write here at bigsoccer or follow USMNT. Learning foreign languages have many many advantages. It is easier to do travelling if you speaks foreign languages. I always try to learn at least few words of the country I´m going to visit.

I also speak few languages myself.

    YES I WAS

I was only in 3 cities: WASHINGTON, CHICAGO AND NYC

I liked mostly Chicago and NYC..

But I would like to do more travelling around USA - maybe NEw England, I have heard that it should be the best part of USA - Boston, Maine etc.

Maybe west coast San Francisco should be cool..

I still have not figured out if it is better to visit east or west coast...
    both are great..

maybe someday I wish I could live and work there for few months or years..
as experience abroad - improving my english and collecting experience in different culture....maybe study is cool in the USA.

Party on campus? Most every school will. Some are more partying than others.

P.S. As to where to go... West Coast is the Best Coast!
