Special teams are used when a team is going to punt the ball, attempt a field goal or kick the ball of after a score or at the start of a half.

You have a kick off coverage team and a punt coverage team. A team has a kick return and a punt return team, the punt return team will either call a play to set up a return or a to try to block the kick.

Finally, there are the field goal teams. One to kick the field goal and one to block the other teams attempt.

---That's one reason. The main reason is that the players huddle up to hear what their next play is going to be.
I don't like George Will, but I love his description of Gridiron Football: "...violence interrupted by committee meetings."

If it's special teams you like, then I've got three words for you: Canadian Football League. I do love the Patriots, but the CFL is everything I wish the NFL was. 110 x 65 yards, one yard line of scrimmage, twenty second play clock after all stops, no instant replay, one time-out per half, and most importantly, three downs to gain ten yards.

Week 2, Toronto Argonauts at British Columbia Lions (BC Place Stadium, Vancouver). The Argonauts kicked a field goal to go up 23-22 with 1:03 left to play. BC promptly marches down field to set up a twenty-nine yard field goal with 0:07 left. But BC kicker Matt Kellett misses to the right. Now if Toronto can't return the ball from the endzone, it will be a rouge, and BC will be awarded one point, tying the score at 23-23. Toronto had three men in the endzone in this case, and K Noel Prefontaine catches the missed FGA, trots around in the endzone to kill the remaining seconds, then punts the ball back into the field, where once it travels 25 yards, it is live, and can be recovered by either team. BC has a five yard safety area to receive the ball, but the ball goes past Kellett, is picked up a Toronto lineman, and returned for a touchdown. Final score: Toronto 30, BC 22.
