What are some of MLS's greatest moments? Maybe surviving this long is a testament in itself. How about the opening of the Home Depot Center with Pele? Columbus Crew Stadium, the first ever SSS for MLS? How about the great MLS Cup of 1997? 2002? List what you think are some of MLS's greatest moments.
Wynalda's goal (1st in MLS history) in the 88th to salvage something from an otherwise unwatchable inagural match. The fans went wild after the goal. That goal saved MLS a LOT of face. MLS Cup 96, pooring rain, big crowd, exciting game featuring Pope's game-winning header to cap the DC comeback from 0-2.
Wow, lots of moments stick out for me... Wynalda scoring the league's first goal, and Lord, those uniforms. Celo's bicycle kick goal. The first match at Crew Stadium/HDC. Watching the supporters groups originate and develop all over the league. Rooney's sports bra antics at the All Star game, crazy kid.(had to stick some comedic relief in here somewhere) For all the stick he gets from everyone, I still have to put Ruiz's golden goal in the Cup final last year followed by his reaction/celebration. The 4th of July crowds. MLS Cup's unique ability to attract driving rainstorms... Which leads me to what I would rank as the #1 moment: Eddie Pope...driving rainstorm...belly slide. 'Nuff said.
LOL.. As soon as I saw your name and then Windows Media Player come up I knew exactly what it would be and I was right.
Dwayne DeRosario's Golden Goal on 10/21/01 and the celebration that followed.       -G
2000 Semi's. Series went to the golden goal OT. Mo Johntson sacrifices his face (literally) to get the ball to Molnar. Molnar burries it to send us to the Cup. Pope's Cup winner is by far the best moment though. Come to think of it, since its been mentioned on this thread, the Cup has ended in a Golden Goal two years in a row. Third time's a charm?
What's ironic is that one of the biggest moments in league history might be action that didn't happen in MLS: This was some measure of real validation for what the league was doing. MLS players scored five of the seven USA goals and an MLS player earned honorable mention tournament honors.
Game 3, Dallas-Chicago, 1999. Arguably the best MLS match ever played. And alot of fascinating side stories in that match.
-MLS Cup 1997 -Also, back in the '96 or '97 season when something like 20,000 fans showed up on a Friday night at RFK to see DC vs. Tampa. Oh yeah, and a hurricane was moving through at the time too.
The Man Formerly Known as Clint Mathis slaloming through 5 or 6 Dallas defenders for the Goal of the Year.
I find this sad, but Albrights 'kick off' goal against Meola (and I say Meola because the rest of the Wizards had nothing to do with the play) was one of the more memorable moments in my mind.
ive been watching since day 1 so here are my fav moments, in semi chornological order 1. wynaldas first goal 2. the week after that first game, where attendances were huge 3. the first all star game at a sold out giants stadium (helped by brasil vs. the world) 4. the 97 cup final in dc had probably the best atmosphere of any mls game to date 5. the 96 cup if i wasnt a galaxy fan i'd say that lucky comeback was the best in MLS ever 6.opening of crew stadium 7. ruizs goal and celebration in mls cup 02 8. Victoria Street (HDC to you non LA people) opening 9. cup 03, mauricio cienfuegos scoring the golden goal winner, running out the tunnel never to return to the field again. (it'll happen)
MLS Cup 96, MLS Cup 97, MLS Cup 2002 And for me that DC-Tampa game in a hurricane where Marco scored in the 72nd minute in-front of 20k for the winner. Worst moment, MLS Cup 2000 where boring wizards beat somewhat less boring fire, though even that had a plus side if it was only in the ammount of chicago supporters there.
Lockhart Stadium Brian McBride's first goal, that one should have been the goal of the year in 96 Digital Takawira Tab Ramos' goal in the 96 All-Star game with the assist comming from El Pibe The Chicago Fire fans at Soldier field durring the US Open Cup (was it 98?) the fans were insane Ray Hudson while doing commentary for Miami described the Fusion as follows, "Frankly, their attack has been about as dangerous as my Grandmother knitting a quilt." John Harkes The day the artificial turf died at Giants Stadium The atmosphere at MLS Cup 97 But the greatest moment of all, DC United beats Vasco De Gama of Brazil for the 98 Interamerican Cup and becomes the champion of the Americas. And ESPN didn't even mention it.
