With several expansion cities already reviviving old NASL names, why not revive the old Detroit Express. Of course revamping the logo and uniform. The name does suit the city of Detroit.
Not sure how "Express" is asociated any more with Detroit than any other city. Hell, the USFL had a team called the LA Express, and it lasted about as long as the Detroit NASL team did. There are worse names, but there are better ones, too.
Express is associated to the auto industry. Historically, as a result of the automobile industry, expressways were created. Certainly, express has a strong historical significance to the Motor City.
I personally feel that the name Express has a strong meaning for the city of Detroit. History states clearly that the automobile industry changed the lifestyle of Americans big time during the 1920s. In fact, it was a social revolution setting a new precedent for most Americans. And with this revolution, the automobile industry founded the concept of EXPRESSWAYS in the 1950s. YES!!!!!! Keep the name EXPRESS.
Here's some old footages of the Detroit Express. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYI-3EPZf4Q"]NASL Shootout: Chicago-Detroit 7/7/1979 - YouTube[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_riT6wrhx8M"]NASL: Dallas Tornado at Detroit Express 6/11/1978 - YouTube[/ame]
Over the past few weeks, I've started to become more and more partial to the Detroit Express. Seems like a lot of teams now are reverting to their old NASL names or were those same teams reincarnated. Here's a list of old NASL names that are currently being used: MLS: Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes, Vancouver Whitecaps NASL: Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, FC Tampa Bay (go by the Tampa Bay Rowdies) There are a lot of fans clamoring for their teams to change their names to reflect old NASL teams like the LA Aztecs, Atlanta Chiefs, Baltimore Bays and, of course, the Cosmos. But, I do like the Express name and more and more everyday I think that should be the name of a Detroit team when we get one.
I would certainly like Chivas USA to rebrand as LA Aztecs. Whilst I am not adverse to Detroit Express I wondered if they could return as the Detroit Generals with hopefully sponsership from General Motors.
Thought I'd paste a revived Detroit Express logo I just came up with, seing how there is some sentimental feeling for the old NASL side. Old: New: DEX is Detroit EXpress combined for a new word mark.
That's just freaking sweet! It's a major improvement over the old one, and I really like the old one. The "D" from the "DEX" would also make an awesome baseball cap. Seriously, any professional sports team anywhere would be proud to have that as their logo. It's enough to get me on board for using Express as the MLS team name.
Looks awesome! Though DEX may not resonate as much with local sports fans...anyway you could tweak it so we could see it with DET instead?
No, but it is something with which a new tradition and identity can be built, as sort of a shorthand nickname for the team. For some reason, that logo design really, really resonates with me.
Understood, but it would take a while for people to say it correctly ("Is it DEX? D-E-X? D-EX?") I mean, people still call DC United "The DC United" and they have to put in their press releases not to add the "The" when referring to the team. Must spread rep...someone rep this man for me for this one!

Since I can never be truly happy with my designs, I fixed up the proposed Detroit Express logos. The original: The DEX one. And the DET one.
BTW, thanks to those that like my designs. I'll try and create some kits for these as soon as all the latest ones are released.
