"Amaica’s controversial goal against Barbados on Tuesday night was unfortunate and not in keeping with FIFA’s motto for fair play, says Barbados’ technical director Reinhard Fabisch.

A furious Fabisch said Trinidadian referee Neal Brizan had “powers” to disallow the goal after Jamaica’s captain Andy Williams slotted home a ball placed on the ground by inexperienced Barbadian goalkeeper Jason Boxill.

“At the end of the day with the FIFA motto: Fairness For The Good Of The Game, the referee could’ve also done something about that goal where our goalkeeper made a silly mistake because he thought it was an off-side,” Fabisch said.

“We’ve taught players to play to the flag or whistle which didn’t happen but then, the referee still has some powers to correct that decision.

“He could have awarded a free-kick or a drop ball or whatever and explained it later to the public or his own colleagues but to give a game away through a silly mistake is very unfortunate,” Fabisch said.

At the same time, it was according to the rules but decisions like that spoil a great game.”

Fabisch claimed the Jamaican coaches came over to the Barbados bench and apologised “because they felt bad about the goal themselves”.

“They said their player could have kicked the ball over the bar or kicked it out of play instead of tapping it into the goal,” Fabisch added.

But in a post-match interview, Jamaica’s coach Wendell Downswell said both officials, the referee and his assistant, were in the best position to make the decision.

“The goalkeeper blundered and you saw it was more or less full concentration on Andy’s part and he knocked it home. He left it up to the referee and the referee ruled accordingly,” Downswell said.

“We’re not saying we are a bit proud but it is within the rules. From time to time, things like that will happen in the game. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn’t,” Downswell added."

Why are they complaining about the goal? they wanted the Jamaican player to just kick it over the bar when he could have scored? i just think that is a terrible excuse, its the goalie's fault that he didnt pay attention, goals like that happen once in awhile, Barbados got no right to be bytching about it.

Tough Break for Barbados. Very costly, too.

It'll be time that a Bajan keeper will make that sort of mistake again, huh?

Bajans aren't very bright on the whole anyway. And in fairness to the Jamaican player, I think he did try to kick the ball over the cross-bar , but missed. Two unfortunate events.
