I am glad that the Gold Cup will be in Mexico again... but i think it needs to go to Central America. I cant see a Central American country hosting it by itself, but I think 2 of them can. If US and Mexico can cohost.. i see no problem with 2 central american countries doing it I think that for a Gold Cup, a stadium should at least have enough seating for 20K spectators. Panama, Nicaragua, and Belize really dont have a chance. Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Honduras are the best candidates. I would have to give the GC to Honduras and Costa Rica. Costa Rica has 3 stadiums than can sit over 20K and 2 out of the 3 can sit over 25K. Honduras has 2 stadiums that can sit more than 35K. There are other factors as well. stadiums should have a roof or cover most of the stadium. If they cant...have the games at night
I dont think CONCACAF looks at it as nations hosting the Gold Cup as much as they do cities. The event is not recorded as "Gold Cup USA 2003" or "Gold Cup USA 2001," instead it Miami, Los Angeles, New England, Washington DC, etc. If you read the press now, Mexico the nation is not co-hosting, but Mexico City is. So we may want to think of cities that could host part of the Gold Cup more than which nation turn is it to host.
It shouldn't be in any of these central american countries apart from Mexico, they have no order down there, the players/staff/referee safty would be in danger. I say leave it in USA, T&T, Mexico and Canada, MAYBE Costa Rica, thats it.
Panama just hosted the UNCAF Copa de Naciones and I don't recal any stories about the players/staff/referee being in danger.
I think that Guatemala should host the Gold Cup because they have a huge fan base who go and watch any game no matter how bad. They have a pretty good stadium which I believe is called the Mateo Flores. Other than that it should be held in Costa Rica because they do have OK stadiums. I'd prefer the tournament to be held in Mexico because it seems a bit more exciting, though no one would show up for a Barbados-Cuba game
I think they could go with co-hosting in UNCAF. Have two stadiums in, say Costa Rica and Honduras. Same with T&T & Jamaica, although I do realize that T&T hosted the U-17's halfway decently.
Pretty much any country (maybe not Nicaragua or Belize) in Central America could host the GC from a stadium standpoint--the question is whether anyone would show up for the matches not involving the home team. Co-hosting would be a good way to reduce that problem.
Which ones could? Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica. Guatemala and Honduras both of which have bigger stadiums and cities than Costa Rica and therefore makes them more attractive in economical terms. For that matter even El Salvador would be a more suitable choice than Costa Rica. On the other hand the people in Costa Rica are currently more motivated to attend a football game(due to the recent good results by the national team and what seems to be a rebirth of the most popular club, Saprissaa) Just as a side note, I can sense that some people will come up with the "danger factor" and all that stuff which is associated with Central American venues(which is a common topic every time the USA Nat loses or has a bad time over there). There doesnt seem to be a way of making people understand that this is part of sports, specially where is it whole heartly felt. I remember reading during the NFL play offs about what a horrible experience playing at Philadelphia and Oakland could be. All the stuff which happened during the visits of the USA Nat team to Central America happened in those stadiums i.e. piss, batteries, shouting, etc. etc. I remember watching snippers during the John Rocker's games in NY. So for all those who believe this is a third world, central american problem better take a look at your own sports venues. It seems that unfortunately playing in the USA seems to be the most dangerous place right now. I think the only way of giving a Central American country the right to host a group is to obviously have the national team playing in there and a high profile team such as Brazil, because otherwise no one would care about watching Canada play Trinidad and Tobago or the likes. I still believe that Florida and California are the best places to host the Gold Cup because thats were there is less of a home field advantage for any team and where decent crowds could be assured for each and every single game.
el salvador just hosted the 2002 Central American and Caribbean games in november. they were huge success. the country has 2 stadiums that could host the Gold Cup (cuscatlan and flor blanca). they have they experience and infrastructure to host a big event. if two stadiums isn't enought, then they're certainly enough to be one of the host cities.
Exactly. I think Honduras and Costa Rica would be a good idea, but they need to make sure the fields are smooth.....something you don't see a lot of in Central America.
I know that, but that was 20 years ago. If Japan and South Korea can co-host a World Cup, they can host a Gold Cup. Sachin
Actually, that war took place in 1969. It is pretty much forgotten. We are pretty good neighbours. Apart from a minor border demarcation dispute, Honduras and El Salvador are too worried about their economic problems to be bad neighbours. I agree with a previous poster: attendance at the games would be the biggest problem.
the war was in 1969 and it wasn't triggered by the game, there were problems already and that war was gonna happen anyway. anyway, like i said before, el salvador certainly has the capabilities after the 2002 central american and caribbean games. el salvador, honduras, and costa rica have 2 stadiums each that are big enough for the gold cup. a shared gold cup between any two of these countries is conceivable. oh, and the panama field is much better than it used to be. it got fixed up for the recent UNCAF tournament so that's another possibility.
I think that next gold cup should be played in Central America, either or COSTA RICA, HONDURAS OR GUATEMALA, also the one after this one could be in JAMAICA or T&T....also one should be played in CANADA why do you need a lot of huge stadiums if nobody goes to see ************ games???
OT Anyone know if Antonio de la Torre, who holds both US and Mexico citizenship has been capped tied to Mexico? Currently a candidate for the Rapids squad.
pls PM the guy that started this thread or post the question on the mexican foro rdl76 or levante may know
too bad corruption has ruined el salvador soccer talent. They got some sick talent out there that dont even play with the national team. I saw their lineup vs bermuda and that was atleast a mix C-Bteam.
Costa Rica or Honduras. No doubt they would get fans travelling from neighbouring countries to watch the matches. Althrough I hate travelling down the Pan-American Highway.
