I hope you're joking. Germany is definitely not an underdog, it's a powerhouse despite bowing out early in the last couple of major tournaments the past couple of years. Their success in this tournament gives them momentum into next years WWC and Olympics now and they seem to have the right manager to take them there. They've always had the talent.
Too many times they never make a come back during these knock out stages, it always just manages to be anti-climatic for them. There was hope when the scoreline was 2-1 but just not enough fighting spirit. Someday they will break that mold and enter the Championship but they are always eliminated before then.
When I ruminate that, at that U-20 WWC, Japan has beaten both these teams (and Spain to boot), I hold some little spark of hope that Japan can do well at next year's WWC.
England with 2082 ranking points beating Sweden with 2061 ranking points it not an upset (they doing it by 4 goal is). England is the highest ranked team in this championship for all matches played in England (so for all matches).
It's ok, but in line with the recent change of the away-goals rule, I don't value the home advantage as much as FIFA rankings still do, so I like to compare the teams on the basis of ranking points only.
France has always ran less than their opponent. FRA 104,6 - ITA 107,9 FRA 109,9 - BEL 116,2 FRA 110,6 - ISL 116,8 FRA 137,6 - NED 140,5 FRA 101,7 - GER 111,4 France should have avoided extra-time against Netherlands.
You may not do so but the FIFA ranking system does, so saying that both the favorites according to FIFA ranking lost are as honest to say that both favortites won because I think playing in white shirts give a 100 point advantage. Also ignoring the home play advantage make all the calculation the ranking is based on a bit incorrect since it was included in the matches the ranking is based on.
