Obviously this isn't his fault - the Crew takes forever to secure visas and his dad died when he was finally cleared to travel - but Henrik not being at training camp was a big reason why he never connected with players. Most of them know Laurent; he's a personable guy and his playing style is very similar to what they were doing. They train under Courtois for a few weeks and then one day near the end of training, a guy comes in who is a stereotypical academic and who wants them to do things completely different. It's like when Ohio State hired Michael Drake as the president to replace Gordon Gee. Gee was a relatable Midwestern guy who could work a room and embraced the traditions that people care about. Drake is an elitist California liberal who is terrible with people and makes no effort to adapt to other ways of life. I still remember the week he was hired, the OSUMB had a concert at Columbus Commons. He got invited and had a table reserved for him dead center in front of the stage. He brought only his wife and no guests. They sat by themselves and he looked visibly annoyed when people came up to say hello. He stood up and raised his hand after being introduced. And then as the band played their first note, he got up and left. I knew immediately he was going to be a disaster.
Gee is no more Midwestern than Drake. The only time he spent in the Midwest was when he was OSU president. What he was/is, is someone with terrific political and personal skills. It was a freakish coincidence, but my first day starting a position at OSU in '07, he happened to come into my building, walked into my office, introduced himself and shook my hand. He wasn't in the building to see me (he was there to see my boss). Some people are good at that. Gee was exceptional. Drake, not so much. Gee also wandered around campus by himself, was very visible and approachable. Carter (not exactly a California liberal) traveled with what looked like a secret service team. Though I suppose he had people skills... of a sort.
Maybe, but he was here for 3 months. There was plenty of time to connect with and win over the players, but HR and his staff couldn't.
Gee also has a hell of a memory. I could probably go up to him, name-drop someone from 20 years ago and that name would be remembered. He'd also randomly pop in on classes which definitely gets bonus points from students. It's easy enough to hide in an ivory tower, but taking random moments out of your week and living at least a little bit of student life can be commendable. The best way to learn the struggles and successes of the people beneath you is to live their life. (See the show Undercover Boss as an example.) Why have people read surveys about the campus bus system when you can actually ride it yourself? Compare that to Drake's horrific public speaking skills and stone-cold personality...and the band stuff didn't help at all. Interestingly enough, he got out of OSU right as (before?) the Dr. Strauss stuff started to come to light.
