Leo McGarry to you and me; he died of a heart attack a few hours ago. Prayers to his family, friends and co-workers on the show.

    RIP... :( :(

Stunned. To die at a very young age of 58 is sad. I know that John Spencer changed his dietary habits after his character had a heart attack in the TWW. IIRC, he had lost like 10-20 pounds and was made to look very pale for those scenes. A great character but truly a great actor.

"You got a best friend? Is he smarter than you? Would you trust him with your life? That's your Chief of Staff."

John Spencer's infectious smile will forever be his hallmark in my mind and will be greatly missed. From all accounts he was a very generous person.

Quotes from his castmates are coming in:

"He was one of those rare combinations of divinely gifted and incredibly generous...There are very few personal treasures that you put in your knapsack to carry with you for the rest of your life, and he’s one of those." Richard Schiff

"John was an uncommonly good man, an exceptional role model and a brilliant actor...We feel privileged to have known him and worked with him. He’ll be missed and remembered every day by his many, many friends,” Aaron Sorkin and Tommy Schlamme (joint statement)

    "Everyone adored him." Allison Janney

"We have all lost a dear, dear brother." Bradley Whitford

I thought he was one of the best parts about watching the West Wing. I wonder how they'll deal with this as he's Max Santos running mate. Way to young to go, RIP :(

This is very sad news to wake up to this morning. :(

My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.

One spoiler site for the WW had McGarry saying the following in a VP debate slated for the next episode:

"By an overwhelming percentage, the first warning symptom of a heart attack is death," Spencer's McGarry says, per the blog. "I'm fortunate to be here."

    Yikes. Prescient stuff.

Me too. Remember when they had that flash forward this season? Leo was certainly alive then.

    This sucks.

Actually, I don't think Leo was in that scene, probably because that would've hinted that Santos/McGarry lost the election, since it was supposed to be only 3 years in the future. Here's the scene described at the WW continuity site:

A great foil to Bartlett's character.

    A damn shame.

    RIP, John Spencer. :(

Ok, ok, since I don't recall it first-hand, I believe you (and TV Guide :)). Maybe he just didn't have any lines in the scene? Or else the link above is not a full transcript....

My wife and I were bummed with this news too. Our favorite actor on the West Wing. He was an anchor for that show. I don't know how they'll deal with his absence, although moving his character into a candidate role probably helped. He wasn't as much of a mainstay on the show as when he was Chief of Staff.

Hopefully, the writers for the show will handle this with the dignity it deserves. It'll be tough to come up with a plausible story line that keeps the continuity of the show in tact, especially given his appearance 3 years in the future (Unless that was his ghost...)

I think it would make the most sense to just have a future campaign episode where he passes away, with dignity, and they select another running mate/VP. To come up with some contrived story about how he had to drop out of his job but is still alive doesn't work, as he essentially did that once already after the Camp David and we all know that he's not going to be in future episodes.

Also, I know it was reported, but he wasn't actually in that scene. The linked dialog is correct (to what I remember, and other stories have corrected this initial error in the wire copies (yes, I sound like a Trekkie here)).

If there are any story gaps, they can just explain them by saying "Listen, we had a plan, the actor died, we had to change the plan a little. So what?" and let it go at that. That's a lot better than running some "Patrick Duffy lives!" jive by us like Dallas did. I don't want them to CGI him into future episodes with dialog clips.

And, this talk of them cancelling WW due to low ratings is worrying. They should move it back to Wednesday and screw going against CSI or whatever. Ruining one successful product by having it compete with someone else's successful but different product isn't a bright idea. Bring it back to Wednesday, please.

I suppose it would be lacking taste for me to say "ha HA! I was RIGHT!" in this thread. So I won't.

I'm pretty sure leo is the one that tells barlett "The president has arrived." I don't know if they will ever now rerun that episode but I will watch it to make sure. Why wouldn't they have had him in there they had all the main characters?

Somebody told me they may actually be re-running this episode this Sunday, that it was already planned. In fact, yes, I see it listed. I thought Josh said "The president's here", but I'm not positive.

Josh did say "The President's here" to make you think that Santos won the campaign. I don't remember whether Leo appeared or not since I didn't copy the episode. As said earlier, a major cog of the show is now gone.
