Dominic Volkmer joins us on a 3-year contract from VfB Oldenburg. The 20 year-old centerback makes his return after beginning his youth career in Werder's academy several years ago. He will be introduced to the U23 team first.

Our U23 team have scheduled a friendly against FC Groningen on July 23. This should be the first match for Johannes Eggestein with that level of competition.

 

Further reinforcements on the way. Leon Jensen transfers from Hertha U19 to Werder U23 for next season. He's an attacking midfielder who had 7 goals and 13 assists in A-Junioren Nord/ost last season.

CB. Maurice Hehne is being promoted to the U23s. Both players sign a contract until 2018.

But I am also aware that it is only a first step in my development, "said Schmidt, who was already in the winter preparation of the U23 training camp at Belek. "That was invaluable experience for me. Now I would like to gain more impressions and prove myself for the U23 and for the Bundesliga club."

 

Eric Oelschlägel is on the Germany Olympics team standby list as one of the potential back up goalkeepers. We're also looking to find a club for him to go out on loan and receive more match practice next season.

 

Werder U19 won 4-1 against Judas Baxmann's Dortmund U19 today. Pelle Hoppe bagged a brace, while Tim Janssen and the new striker signed from Eintracht Frankfurt, Yves Mfumu added the other goals.

Both of them scored goals in Werder II's 3-0 win against Groningen II today.

Guess that was bound to happen when our top two U19 eligible players, Eggestein and Schmidt are continuing to play with the pros or in the 3.Liga respectively. Thankfully the U17s started off their season with a 7-0 win vs Niendorfer TSV.

Johannes Eggestein and Niklas Schmidt have been called up for the Germany U19 squad to play against Russia and the Netherlands.

 

Three Werder youngsters from the 2000-age group are selected for the Germany U17 NT. They will take part in a Four Nations tournament from September 5-14.
