It is reported that Arsene Wenger is getting ready to bid £2m when the window opens for Brazilian goalkeeper MARCOS. His attempt earlier on in the year fell through due to Marcos and some "personal reasons", but now apparently AW is looking at him again.
i give this a thumbs sideways... but then again, id just assume have you in goal jeff~ how come lehmann cannot come out to deflect or catch crosses?? its standard keeping!!!
can anyone fill me in on who this marcos guy is? i've never heard of him... age, club, etc... thanks. we definitely need a keeper. but even is we get one, who's to say he won't end up being 2nd or 3rd and never play in the prem, like almunia? wenger is sticking to mad jens like glue...
If you want, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. My point still stands. Can you honestly see Wenger buying English? He's already signed up another foreigner to bolster your defence.
Gee a 31 year old GK... Well it made sense when I bought Marcos for my Arsenal team when CM4 first came out but this move doesn't look so hot a couple of years later in real life. Its not like Jens has been the cause of our recent bad form. Sure he had a few mistakes but we would have been ok behind a good defense. I really hope AW doesn't see that kid defender and a 31y GK as the answer.
I think there is better quality out there for Wenger to sign but if Marco is indeed on his way in, I don't see much downside of his arrival. He's only 31 which is relatively young for a healthy keeper, so he could possibly stick around for awhile. Marco's play has been pretty consistant throughout the years and he's pretty strong in the air which is a major plus when you take into account the british style of play. I hate to bash Jens as he seems to be a good guy (great Q&A article with him in this month's 442magazine) but time and time again Jen's relexes and positioning have put the team into some negative binds. Personally I would like to see Wenger go after Van Der Sar, Keller or Ian Walker.
I've said it on the Man Utd board about the likes of Giggs and Keane, why bother with another stop gap? I would much rather a long-term replacement is brought in. What is your opinion on yet another older keeper?
Isn't it great that when antifan spits the dummy, he needs to go completely off topic in a futile attempt to insult people. Pity it fails every time.
Ummm the topic is "Marcos" a goalkeeper, so those (including yourself) that started talking about central defenders are the ones that took this thread off topic. Also....while I can't speak for antifan for certain.....just because someone doesn't insert " " doesn't mean they aren't joking.
Finally, AW realizes that the former Borussia Dortmund GK experiment has run it's course and it's time for a change. Warning: The Arsenal FC are not at fault for heart conditions resulting in Gooners viewing Jens Lehmann in goal. Arsene didn't read the fine print on Jens Lehmann's contract it read: ACHTUNG!!!!
I think this is a good move. He has an estimated 6 years left, that's plenty. You want a nice solid GK that doesn't screw up alot (think man-u's 3 most recent goalkeepers for the antithesis). As I recall wasn't this Brazil's world cup winnining GK, that says alot to me.
I don't know much about Marcos and I don't want to. It's one thing having to use reserve midfielders because Edu and Gilberto are globe-trotting with their nats but having our keeper miss matches because of jet lag seems like a horrible idea to me.
If you are suggesting that I have 1,245 post in this forum, then you are definately mistaken. Try opening your eyes, look at other forums for a change or use the search function. Good point about the jet lag issue. I hadn't even considered that aspect.
Man, I feel slow. I had to re-read TheSlipperyOne's post a couple times at first. Great post, though.
