Wenger is fanning the flames and trying to force Man U's stance on the issue. He's a smart guy, that one. He'll no doubt sit back and wait to see if any fireworks come of this. The Everton rebuttal wll be interesting. I don't think Man U will rise to his bait.

    I agree with Dark Savante

Wenger is an inciter, and a genius at that.

Haha, what jacko in their right mind's gonna pay that kinda cash for a hyped up 18 year old? NO ONE.

We dont even need him, if Everton want to keep him and ruin his career, fine, but he's not gonna want to stay their forever, and soon we might have another Louis Saha media circus on our hands.

DS, great minds think alike... I said the same thing to myself when I read the article... I was like wtf? 1. why should he care and 2. if the perenial champs go after a guy that you cannot have, why would you praise him so much if he is really that good? I think that he would love to see us blow 30 mill on him and hamper our spending by getting a player we probably could survive without... he is a smart guy... if they have 2 or 3 years of moderate success, either CL, Prem, or FA in each season they will become a real force because of their new stadium... (unfortunately for his hopes and dreams I think we will land 4-5 major cups in the next 3 seaons)

Hah! Do you honestly believe Wenger would say *anything* in our favor?! A more likely reason for his comments is that he knows he doesn't have the cash to buy him but he hopes United will, only so that they'll waste valuable cash that could be better spent elsewhere.

Yeah - it's not like Kenwright is talking out of his starfish is it?

Who was it who was so desperate to try and extend his contract that they wanted to talk to him in the middle of the preparation for Euro 04? Who had to be told in no uncertain terms to leave Rooney alone while he was with the England team?

Why is Rooney apparently unwilling to sign that contract extension that Kenwright is so desperate to secure?

All this media crap stinks of Kenwright trying to max out Rooneys transfer value. Everton are desperate for cold, hard cash right now - they cannot afford to keep Rooney full stop.

The best you can hope for is to keep hold of him until the January transfer window - the only thing preventing any real movement on a potential Rooney transfer (to any club) is the broken toe. Once he is able to undergo a full medical then you will see the real positioning taking place...

I think everyone is reading a little too much into David Gill's comments about Utd not being able to afford any one player at 40 or 50 mil. Its the same with Everton and their comments that they won't sell for less than 40 or 50 mil. I think what we are seeing here is the early and tentative stages of negotiation which i think will see a more realistic transfer value of 20-25 million being set. Todays press reveals that Everton now won't sell for anything less than 30 million so already you can see that demands are being revised. I really think everton are resigned and quite willing to sell Rooney. Kenwright is just making it look like they really don't want to sell the guy in the same way Ridsdale did with Ferdinand. The managers are making noise about not wanting to lose the player (O'Leary & Venables - Ferdinand, Moyes- Rooney) but at the end of the day, financial circumstances dictate that the player will be sold. Maybe with Rooney it will be in a years time but either way, Everton are in a poor financial situation and the fact that one player's sale goes a long way to relieving the situation and allowing them to move on with a stadium idea means there is no way he'll stay. Also, there is no way now that Rooney has gotten a taste for playing with great players that he will be satisfied playing for Everton - a club that has no realistic chance of significantly improving in the near future( sorry but you can't argue with that) If he doesn't sign an extension this summer, his current value is as high as it will ever be thus forcing a sale or risking losing out on millions.

As for UTD fans, i am surprised you are not more excited about the prospect of Rooney joining the reds. Depending on how you rate Rooney, i honestly think he is potentially a generation-defining player in the same way Vieira and Henry are defining the current Arsenal generation and Keane defined the succes of Man Utd in the 90's. Players like this don't come around very often and i think you must take into account the fact that he could define the success the team has for the next ten years and perhaps not think so much about whether you could do ok without them. Man Utd must consider itself to be one of the best in the world and to maintain this situation, they have to buy the best. Also Rooney isn't ready to play every game in a season and so he could be brought along slowly for a couple of years before playing every game. I think you just have to look at the case of Ronaldinho. Utd were a couple of mil away from sealing a move for a guy desperate to join them. Their hesitancy and inability to get the deal done has really cost them big especially when you look at what he's doing for Barcelona. Do you really want to be thinking the same thing if Rooney leaves for another rival and has success there, especially knowing you could have had him

Good shout - and for what its worth I would add Robben to that list with Ronaldinho. Seeing how he played in Portugal these last few weeks convinced me he was the long-term replacement for Giggs. That is now two players we have lost like that - Duff last year and Robben this year.

I hope that we do not have to use Smith as part of a trade should we get Rooney - I think El Shish is right in that we would have to ease Rooney in over the first season. To have Smith there would allow that to take place in a controlled manner.

My guess is that the deal will go down at approx £22M with another £10M or so to follow in payments linked to performance....

    I share your view https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=119879

I'm surprised at the apathy toward Rooney shown by some on this board. He's a win, win, win player for United in my view. The Chinese market love him and that'll bring in alot of money..He'd pay back his transfer fee in the lliteral sense and also with his enhancement of the team.

    Peace.

you have phishyitus now do you~~~?

I was complementing your manager, live with it... the fact is, we are still the most dominant team, Period. we have a horrible year and win the FA Cup... you have the best season in your history and you have 1 trophy to show for it... I am not belittling the success Arsenal have had this season, or the 1 or 2 other cups you have won in recent times... however i feel that Arsenal for the most part are an emerging force, not a perenial force like we are... again, not sledging your team, just stating facts based on the last, decade plus...

Is there some imaginary six year cut off date that we are not aware of?

We all know that football didn't really exist before 1992...

I think the people here just won't get their hopes up about Rooney until he signs on the line...after all that crap we went through with Ronaldinho, it just isn't worth it.
