I stuck up for guys when the name ReAL came out, thinking, hey, you guys are associated with one of the top clubs in the whole world. Now, I've learned that you guys aren't even the real Real's poodle. From the sounds of it, you guys are just a bunch of ReAL wannabes - a Wayne's World parody. Or at worst, you guys are a bunch of stalkers. Its kind of creepy, really.

Thw whole thing is unnerving. I can't figure this out. Why not just call yourselves World Champion Soccer Team from Utah. Its equally ficticious as your current name. Oh well, rant over. Welcome to MLS. Have a nice day.

That thread doesn't have any good facts in it. Just a couple of opinions on whether or not a relationship exists. Just because it's not published on MLSnet.com doesn't mean it is or isn't there. In fact, on the above mentioned thread there was a link to another thread which source RSL marketing director as stating that Checketts has been over in Madrid working on the details.

So to this point there is nothing to prove or disprove a relationship. It very well could be there.

Actually, we have heard from the management of ReAl Salt Lake that there really is a connection with Real Madrid and they are working on cementing the relationship. They haven't told us yet what the relationship consists of, or how it will affect the team or us, but they have stated that it is a fact.

Probably consisting of losing the last four games of your season, along with the first 28 or so.

You're using a Bigsoccer thread as your source?

You should know by now not to trust anything you read on BS.

If RSL cements a REAL relationship not a POODLE relationship, then I will retract my comments. What is REAL with ReAL? I'd say if some reserve players are on the RSL roster, it would be a really good sign. Having Real come to SL for a match would be another.

Still, it does seem risky to go ahead and name the team BEFORE the relationship is indeed cemented. Reminds me of my Alma Mater - Rutgers. Back in the Revolutionary War days, Queens College was sure that Col. Henry Rutgers was going to bequeath his fortune to them. So, they jumped the gun and renamed the college in his namesake before the chap died and enriched the college.

Rutgers go some money, sure. But the main part of the fortune went to Columbia. So, I would be nervous about this. For example, what if Real were relegated, would RSL change its name to Sporting Salt Lake?

That brings to mind a Mormon joketo be made about RSL:

    What is ReAL?

If you are LDS, you'll get it. To all else, really sorry, but it ain't even that funny.

Well, here's my take on the RSL-Real connection. Checketts goes to Madrid and begs Real to use their name in America and, by the way, can we come and train in Spain this spring?. Real agreed. Doesn't seem like anything more.

No rumors of Real players playing for RSL.
No rumors of RSL being a development team for Real.
No rumors of Real coming the SLC to play RSL.

So this opens the door to consider why was Real chosen for SLC? Why not Inter? or ManU? or Arsenal? or Barca? One wonders...

If you will be content with rumors, I can rumor this one. A member of RSL's FO hinted pretty strongly at this when I spoke with him. There. There's a rumor you can tell all your friends. It's true, too!

um... did real zaragosa, real sociodad or real betis consult real madrid before they used "real"? of course not, since the name was actually assigned to them. still, real madrid does not hold exclusivity on the word "real" in a team's name.

i am glad i wasn't here when the Wiz was still the name in KC. With all the uproar over "ReAL" i could only imagine what it was like when TRULY stupid names like "Wiz" or "MetroStars" were new.

You won't believe there is a relationship between Real Madrid and RSL until Checketts sires an illegitimate child with the President of Real Madrid's daughter... ... come on. :D

My Brother and some of his Soccer teammates that play soccer for Uvsc were invited to a Luncheon with Dave and Val Hale when he visited UVSC. They talked about allot of things. One of the Questions they asked was what was the Relationship with Real Madrid? Dave stated they were in talks for up to 3-4 months to get them to Give there blessing to have the name Real SL. There are allot more exciting things they talked about. Like when they get a Stadium Built, Real Madrid are to come and play in our new Shiny Stadium. It was part of the agreement they signed in the Contract. He mentioned that 'ONLY' those with Season tix will guarantee this exclusive Friendly and privelage to see them play. (better get your tix) Same thing with the Reserves about some sort of co-training agreement and having some americans go abroad to train and visa versa. Its going to be Good times So Hurry and get that stadium built. :)
