I actually think investing into winning the Conference League has been one of Mourinho's best decisions so far. Just having the team win any cup is creating a lot of positive energy and fan excitement. Even if it's not quite as tough a path as getting through Ajax to the Europa League semi's last year, the chance for it not to end on another sour European note is a lot bigger than the name on the trophy or competition.

Don't let anyone fool you. Mourinho is the final word on Roma's transfer decisions. He wouldn't have come without that power and it's also why Roma has no traditional DC under Pinto. Also, Mourinho talks constantly -- a bit too much probably -- about Roma's budget constraints compared to Europe's richest clubs. Mourinho's standard for "success" at Roma is to simply be worth his salary. That means creating optimism around the club which he's done 100% to this point. Going forward it means attracting better players and improving the roster and simply getting better results than a decent manager at half his salary would get. No rational fan is expecting an overnight miracle of a Scudetto and CL final, just steady and noticeable improvement from the past few years. .
