let's stick with the Derby theme and call the team "Oakland County FC"

    Team ran by Ben Steffans.

Does the quote "Detroit City FC is also honored to bring soccer back to the Motor City" mean that the team will play in the City limits? Because, as we all know, there is another pretty good team in the area of metro-Detroit

It had better mean that. Otherwise, the team name is idiotic.

I've never been a huge fan of the name "Detroit Express" ... but it's starting to grow on me, especially when you put up against these euro poser names like "Real FC AC City" etc.

OK, so maybe 2011 (a.k.a. "20XI" or "20eleven") wasn't a gee-whiz year for footy in Motown. But this is my makeshift year-in-review and year-to-come.

Concacaf Gold Cup at Ford Field

Ford Field got a dream matchup for the Gold Cup: USA hosting Canada in the Yanks' and Canuks' first match of the tourny. The Stars and Stripes got a solid but hard-fought win. Canada would end up getting eliminated after the first round, while the USA back-doored their way to the Final (which ended up being taken by Mexico). But from a local angle, both the Detroit Brain Trust and the fan groups got some face-time, to get another jump-up on getting a pro team(s) here.

    Michigan Hosts Big Ten Tournament

May not have gotten as much pub as maybe it could, but the Big Ten tournament was hosted in Ann Arbor. Both local teams got bounced in the QF round; with #1 seed Northwestern taking it. Of all of the Michigan college teams, Calvin College's mens team went to the D-III final, losing to Ohio Wesleyan; and Grand Valley matched that with a finals appearance in Women's D-II, bowing to Saint Rose; making them the two most successful college teams in their respective brackets. (Note: props to MLIVE covering small colleges in Michigan http://www.mlive.com/soccer/index.s...for_michigans_small_college_soccer_teams.html)

    Bucks get 200th Win

The (Mid)-Michigan Bucks picked up their 200th win of all time, in all competitions. The most successful team in the PDL history hosted the first two rounds of the playoffs, but fell to the Thunder Bay Chill on home ground (their only home loss of the season).

    Lights at Oakland University

OU got to host all of their home matches in Rochester, instead of splitting with Ultimate Arenas. My contacts say that it was a decade in the making. The games at the Ult got good crowds; kind'a wished they continued. At least spring ball is retained by the NCAA; so some spring college games at the Ult should be scheduled.

Stories to Watch 2012 [some are just throwing-stuff-at-the-wall, and may not really occur]

    Early-year freindlies in Pontiac

Pro Team(s) coming (MLS, USL, WPS)? Related: MLS expansion to cap at 20, or MLS Teams to move?

Bucks 5K stadium to be finalized?

Mass Transit in metro Detroit; could this benefit our little operation? (Two recent failures: Light Rail down Woodward on hold; Troy rejects transit center.)

Detroit team in NPSL. (Midwest Division that will include FC Buffalo, Erie Admirals, Detroit City FC, and Binghamton FC. http://www.npsl.info/home/583810.html )

Bucks get Placed into Expanded U. S. Open Cup

Pontiac Silverdome to even get started? What would be the trigger to start the triple-arena?

Gee, you'd think that an architectural firm with as much stadium-building experience as Rossetti would have taken those things into consideration when they did those renderings. Oh well, it's a good thing that we have you smart guys, who obviously know more than they do about their business, to set them straight.

OK, so the MLS Sched is extended; better to keep the Dome up?

Now that the newest MLS schedule is out, and has a very early start, and very late finish (October for the regular season; December for MLS Cup, with the higher-point team hosting), did the thought cross your mind that maybe the best thing is to have an enclosed stadium? Also, Toronto is mimicking what Montreal did a couple years ago, and have their early Concacaf Champoins League match moved into an enclosed facility. (Although a Detroit MLS team could also do that; moving a match to Ford Field.) I know that this winter has been absolutely mild, but there is always the chance of blustery cold meteorology in late September through November.

    Re: Michigan Bucks Schedule 2012

...missed the first line on the schedule page: http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/2012/22344.html#SCHEDULE

Tuesday, May 15; U. S. Open Cup: TBA (at) Michigan Bucks, site TBA

So the first Open Cup game occurs before the regular season starts (sort of like the Bundesliga).

Also, if you plan on going to both Bucks matches and Detroit City FC matches, they both have home day games on Satuirday May 26. The Bucks are at the Canton Cup at noon, and Detroit City are scheduled for home. Wayne State Stadium does not have lights, so that would also be a day game.

Also, how about this for an extended-stay road trip... Saturday June 23: Columbus at Chicago Fire (MLS); Tuesday June 26: Michigan at Chicago Fire (PDL)

The team will begin its spring season on Feb. 18, hosting Detroit at 5 p.m. at Glick Field House.

From the USA home page: http://www.ultimatesoccerarenas.com/
    Michigan Buck College Cup 1

If they were a day apart I could see people making the trip, but staying 3-4 nights in Chicago could be too expensive for people.

hotels in Chicago are unreasonably expensive, especially for a city so cheap. I say that as someone who works for United Airlines and therefore gets discounts and has to go there at least once a year.
