There used to be a special passanger train that ran down the Mississippi Valley, through Cairo, IL and Memphis that was called the Egyptian Zipper. For that matter, there's that part of central New York where a lot of the town names come from the ancient world, such as Syracuse, Utica and Rome. I assume that doesn't explain Herkimer, however.
NY's also got... Romulus Liverpool Cardiff Pompey Phoenix Cicero Clay Homer Mexico Zurich Owls Nest Cat Elbow Corner Irelandville Butchers Corner Buena Vista Italy Italy Hill Greece Town Pump West Sweden Aristotle Freedom North Cuba The Narrows Chipmunk Haymaker
Pennsylvania has Weedville, Bobtown, Jersey Shore (in the middle of the state), Forty Fort, and the town one letter from the history books, Kutzville. West Virginia has both Mt. Gay and Gay in addition to Nutter Fort.

All of of these are in Kentucky, and are listed on the big map of Ky the sales people here use here at work. And I left a lot out. Monkey's Eyebrow Eighty Eight Fairplay Neon Krypton Dice Confluence Happy Dwarf Scuddy Vest Slemp Hi-hat Busy Belcher Mouthcard Ransom Stopover Rooster run (I'm told David Letterman had some hand in this town's five-minutes of fame in the late 80s, but I don't remember it.) And in the "Are these even words?" category we have- Seco Almaz Nedo Milax There's actually a lot that fit into that category Now Versailles, KY isn't a very funny name in and of itself, unless you consider the proper Kentucky pronounciation, which is 'Vursales'. On that note, there is the whole debate about how to properly pronounce my hometown, Louisville. If you're using more than two syllables, we know you're not from the area. For the record, I pronounce it Lou-vool, and I don't have any hint of a southern accent. Most people think I'm from Michigan when I talk. Also, in my childhood neighborhood, there was a Maalox court.
Zzyzx (pronounced ZYE-zix), California. It was founded by a radio evangelist who wanted to name the town after "the last word in the English language."
