I assume your #5 was NC st. , not UNC I'll hold off until Albyn jones come out with his new rankings. no sense doing them twice. I suspect there will be shifts after last weekend. (Cal, A&M, etc.)
eh, i guess you could make a case for some rivalries. carolina-virginia is usually one of if not the premiere matchup in the acc every year. and maybe you could say it's revenge week after saturday's football matchups. carolina-virginia, lsu-south carolina, va tech-bc, etc...
I think Oregon vs UW is also a rivalry. WA. St. vs UW is the conventional rivalry, but I am pretty certain that UO vs UW is maybe even a stronger one, or at least as strong. Very intense battle.
In the WCC, UP and Santa Clara is it, since they have held or shared every WCC championship and are usually fighting for the automatic bid. UP also has a pretty good claim to a rivalry with UW. They go to each other's tournaments every year and play every year. They also recruit out of the same local club programs and regions. If they are both in the tournament, they are guaranteed to see each other in rounds 1 or 2 because of the travel rules. Often the path to success in the tournament is trough each other. Maybe it will be again this year.
yeah, I'll make 'em, but I'd like to wait until Thursday when the New Albyn Jones ratings come out. For those of you who haven't figured it out, I've been making my predictions from Jones. cpthomas as been doing his predictions off of the RPI rankings and we are comparing.
I think we were only identifying the rivalries being played this coming weekend (and listed in the above lists). UW is playing UO this weekend. I get why UW and UP might be a rivalry in the future but i guess i haven't considered it a rivalry game in past years since UP has had such a huge margin of victory over UW in the past. If UW continues to be and become more competitive, it could probably blossom into a wonderful rivalry considering their proximity and the fact that they would routinely play one another in the first rounds of the tournament. I hope so!
I didn't get that we were restricted to that list, sorry. I thought we were talking rivalries in general. Part of what makes a rivalry is familiarity with the opponent. Since we play the same 4 opponents and see each other play 5 times a year, I think it's a natural. Just because the margin of victories was lopsided doesn't eliminate it from rivalry status. I'd point out some other rivalry records, but I don't want to deal with the angry hornets. I guess I'm just looking back further than you might be. All through the 90's and until Hope Solo graduated, they were, in fact first weekend opponents on a regular basis. I think we ended their season every year but once, but several were close games. But you are right, it's been a while. the last time was 2001. They do seem to be getting better, though. Maybe it will pick up again. If they keep playing like they have, it could happen this year.
Here we go with picks based strictly on the RPI, with a few personal comments. This the NCAA's published RPI covering games through October 19. All the usual warnings apply about the RPI not really being intended to pick game outcomes at this point in the season. I'll indicate the teams' RPI ranks together with the picks. 1 Florida State 6 over Clemson 110 2 Duke 7 over Miami 44 3 Florida 9 over Arkansas 126 4 Boston College 8 over Maryland 133 5 Wake Forest 21 over NC State 88 6 South Carolina 44 over LSU 45 - closest in the RPI of these games. Home field advantage to SC 7 Tennessee 80 over Alabama 84 - next closest, home field advantage to Tennessee 8 Georgia 35 over Auturn 53 9 Vanderbilt 69 over Mississippi 103 10 Texas 17 over Kansas 38 11 San Diego 29 over Pepperdine 112 - Note: this is my pick for potential upset of the week. Pepperdine on some days can play with the best in Division 1 and on other days underperforms. Which team will show up for San Diego? 12 California 30 over Arizona State 13 Louisville 63 over Georgetown 79 14 North Carolina 1 over Virginia 12 15 Notre Dame 5 over Rutgers 19 16 South Florida 132 over Pittsburgh 142 17 Michigan State 23 over Indiana 129 18 Penn State 13 over Illinois 32 19 Colorado 15 over Drake 182 20 Northwestern 64 over Iowa 121 21 Texas A&M 11 over Texas tech 109 22 Portland 3 over San Francisco 202 23 Oklahoma State 10 over Iowa State 174 24 Nebraska 77 over Oklahoma 163 25 Minnesota 28 over Wisconsin 85 26 West Virginia 34 over Marquette 55 27 Milwaukee 26 over Detroit 134 28 Washington 18 over Oregon State 135 29 Stanford 2 over Arizona 40 30 UCLA 4 over USC 14 31 Washington State 39 over Oregon 56 32 Penn State 13 over Purdue 46 33 Louisville 63 over villanova 74 34 Wake forest 21 over Miami 43 35 Georgetown 79 over Cincinnati 108 36 Boston College 8 over Virginia Tech 25 37 Notre Dame 5 over Seton Hall 5 38 NC State 88 over Maryland 133 39 St Johns 60 over Connecticut 76 40 West Virginia 34 over South Florida 132 41 South Carolina 44 over Arkansas 126 42 Michigan 116 over Indiana 129 (At this area of the RPI, the teams are in the middle of the bell curve and are very close even though this many ranking spots apart. On my own, I might pick Indiana especially due to home field advantage.) 43 Minnesota 28 over Northwestern 64 44 Texas 17 over Missouri 37 45 Missisippi 103 over Kentucky 119 46 Duke 7 over Clemson 110 47 Oklahoma State 10 over Nebraska 77 48 Oklahoma 163 over Iowa State 174 49 Florida 9 over LSU 45 50 Illinois 32 over Ohio State 52 51 Rutgers 19 over DePaul 213 52 Georgia 35 over Alabama 84 53 Marquette 55 over Pittsburgh 142 54 Wisconsin 85 over Iowa 121 55 Kansas 38 over Baylor 172 56 Washington State 39 over Oregon State 135 57 Auburn 53 over Tennessee 80 58 Texas A&M 11 over Colorado 15 (Will home field advantage, especially altitude, give this game to Coloradi?) 59 Portland 3 over St Marys 111 60 Washington 18 over Oregon 56 61 Stanford 2 over Arizona State 36 62 California 30 over Arizona 40
Pepperdine has not lost to San Diego in 5 years (3-0-2). How would Pepperdine winning affect San Diego's RPI? San Diego has a tough road ahead with Pepperdine, LMU, and Gonzaga on their senior night, and all three games on the road. With an RPI of 30, I figure they need to win at least two of these three since their last game is vs. Portland.

Well, Albyn didn't come out with the new ratings yet this week. I see a bunch of teams that should make some shifts this week and some pretty close games they are playing in, so I just did the first 31 games so far. I figure I would have to do many over anyway, so I'll wait and see if he gets the ratings out by the weekend. The following game predictions are from his Oct 13 ratings. some will undoubtedly reverse with the new ratings (USC, Wash st. prehaps Ill. come to mind) all rating differences include home field (60 pts) SE is perhaps 80 - 90 points for most teams. but some are dipping into the 70's 1. Clemson at Florida State 383 2. Duke at Miami(FL) 177 3. Arkansas at Florida 495 4. Maryland at Boston College 491 5. North Carolina State at Wake Forest 382 6. LSU at South Carolina 7. How in the world do you come up with a prediction for UO over UW??? Even though UW's RPI is 18 and UO's is somewhere around 56??? How would that prediction be justified. I mean, it can happen, its a rivalry game, just trying to figure out the math that predicted that outcome!
It was WSU at Oregon. and it's Albyn, not RPI. As I said, this is using the ratings from 2 weekends ago. I'm sure they will change, since WSU had a big win against USC. I'll admit it's like predicting yesterday's weather.... any way you look at it, it will still be within the SE of both teams.
OK, pretend it's Thursday. Albyn Jones has the Oct 20 ratings out. Here's the picks with home field from that list. JB will no doubt be happier with the picks for the NW teams. I didn't do the actual math for many games. If the home team had a higher rating, it was selected. It would have at a minimum a 60 point advantage. Otherwise if the ratings were within 80-100 points at a glance, I did the math. I've listed the rating spread for the closest games. I have highlighted in red the games that switched from the 2 week old ratings 1. Clemson at Florida State 2. Duke at Miami(FL) 3. Arkansas at Florida 4. Maryland at Boston College 5. Surprise of the weekend in the pac-10: Wassu lost to Oregon State. Also, UW beat Oregon. Stanford wiped out ASU, 4-0 and Cal finally won a game (vs AZ). UCLA and USC off on Sunday. That's the pac-10 report.
