12,908 in DC, but that is a good-looking and great-sounding 12,908. Mics were well located. Another good Thursday night crowd.
Not as high a number as I would have thought - but at least you could hear the crowd - it was good mic placement. Sounded ike there was a couple thousand more there. jeff
Yup even Columbus beat us! LA 23,596 Dallas 20,500 Columbus 13,290 DC 12,908 We may not have the most fans but we still have the best
One of two things is happening league wide this year 1) MLS is fudging the numbers significantly less 2) More fans are showing up who actually have tickets Either way all of these Thursday night games have looked good on TV no matter the reported numbers.
Looked like more than that to me. I'd have guessed 18,000. And before anyone asks why I was watching on TV rather than being at the stadium, I was watching from a bar in East Newton, MA. Sitting with another DC United fan, when a middle-aged lady next to me who was watching the Sox get hammered on another screen leaned over a loudly asked why I was watching 'that shit!' Sigh.
It looked to me like DC did what I've been hoping all teams would do for the Thursday night game and put most of the people on the side the camera faces. A couple of times they showed an angle with the stands behind the benches and that looked rather sparse. All teams should be doing this for the Thursday night game. Can anyone that was there confirm this to be the case?
One side was full. Other was 60% empty. I'd guess that this time, in contravention of the norm, the full side was the one the cameras caught. (Haven't seen the TV coverage yet).
Our total last night is the only legitimate total to date. All of the other Thursday game totals are utter bullsh*t. As if Columbus had more people than RFK last night!!!
the Dallas number listed in this post is not the correct "Thursday" attendance. Dallas did get 20,500 for their Sunday home opener v Colorado on 4/22. The Thursday figures are: 23,596 on Apr. 12 for FC Dallas at Los Angeles Galaxy 13,290 on Apr. 19 for New England Revolution at Columbus Crew 14,087 on Apr. 26 for New York Red Bulls at FC Dallas 12,908 on May 3 for New England Revolution at D.C. United for a Thursday night average at this point in the season of 15,970.
I can confirm. This was absolutely the case. Talked to a DC ticket rep before the match and he told me this was done for TV's sake. Lowest crowd by numbers this season, but a lot of those Columbus fans came disguised as yellow bleachers.
Thanks for the info. EVERYONE should be doing this. That looked like the most packed 13k I've seen and came across well on TV. I wish other teams would follow this practice for the Thursday night game.
Right. And, surprizingly enough DCU actually dominated and won the game but NE Rev's score was inflated in the reports. As if Revs actually had the same number of goals as mighty DCU
I love how after the first Thursday night game there were people with the audacity to complain about the 23,500 in attendance at the HDC. A crowd, that if you saw on TV after the 15th minute when everyone had found their seat, looked fantastic on TV. For all the talk about how DC has the "best fans in the league" I think a huge amount of credit needs to go to the Galaxy and their fans who support their team in numbers not even close to being reached by other teams. The Galaxy have a good shot at having 20k in attendance on a bad night. Why can't other teams do the same? You can say that we have 10 times the population to draw from but I'd argue we have 20 times the competing things to do as well.
